FARMVILLE, Va. – A four-goal and three-assist performance from Winthrop junior attacker Nicole Beatson led an Eagle charge that saw five different players score four goals each in a 21-7 blitz of the Longwood women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon.
The seven-point game from Beatson spoiled the Lancers' senior day with their balanced attack, finding the back of the net 11 times in the opening 30 minutes, and 10 more times in the final half.
The junior attacker displayed her versatility throughout the contest as she also won six draw controls and cashed in on all three free-position opportunities. Saturday's seven-point day followed a nine-point outing against Presbyterian when she scored four times and divvied out five assists.
"Today was certainly a challenging game and one in which we unfortunately did not play anywhere near our best," said fifth-year head coach
Elaine Jones. "We have the talent, but once again, we didn't have all 12 players on the field contributing and executing at both ends for the whole 60 mintues."
Joining Beatson with multi-point days were Katie Clark (four goals, two assists), Katherine Judge (four goals), Ellie Marindin (four goals, one assist) and Kristen Shriver (four goals, three assists) who all tickled the twine at least four times to account for 20 of the 21-goal outburst from the Eagles.
After a
Riley Dolan goal cut the Longwood (5-10, 1-4 Big South) deficit to 4-2 with 20:02 left in the first half, a five-goal run from Winthrop (6-9, 3-2 Big South) quickly turned the tide and created a separation the Lancers couldn't overcome.
Winthrop dominated almost every statistical category including shots (32-18), draw controls (18-12), clears (15-9) and free-positions goals (7-0).
The Eagles had three separate runs of four-or-more in the contest, including a five-tally stretch in the late stages of the second half before
Cassie Angeles picked up the final goal of the day at the 2:50 mark, ending Winthrop's run. The Eagles also had a four-goal stretch in the second half that turned a 12-5 game into an 18-5 contest and initiate the continuous clock.
Freshman
Lexi Davis tied her career-best with two goals on the afternoon, both coming as the first tally for the Lancers in each half. Davis also dished out two assists to lead the blue and white with four points.
Dolan also dished out two assists and
Kaitlin Luccarelli extended her team-lead in points with two goals. Luccarelli sits at 41 points on the season after netting her 27th and 28th goals, while sophomore
Stephanie Roberts sits second on the team with 38 points and a team-high 31 goals. Roberts also won a team-best five draw controls of the Lancers 12 total.
In between the pipes, senior goalkeeper
Chelsea DiIonno got her fourth career start and picked up a save in just under 22 minutes of action before junior
Imani West took over for the final 38 minutes. West collected five saves on the afternoon while both goalies picked up a ground ball apiece.
Freshman midfielder
Dana Joss extended her points streak to nine-straight with an assist and picked up a team-high four ground balls in the losing effort. Fellow freshman
Molly Barkman, who came in among the top-50 in the nation in draw controls, won two more Saturday.
Davis' two-goal and two-assist day and Joss' assist give the Lancers a collective six players with 30-plus points on the season, and four of those six dishing out double digit assists.
"With two conference games remaining, I'd like to see us cut down on our turnovers and fouls, while also finishing with a higher percentage on our shots," Jones said. "I'm confident we can achieve these goals."
Saturday's senior day was the last home game for defender
Madelynn Rollins and goalkeeper
Chelsea DiIonno, who have been part of a Lancer squad that has made at least a Big South Quarterfinals appearance in every season they've been on campus.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to have coached Maddie and Chelsea," Jones said. "They have both been so dedicated and committed to our program both on and off the field during their time at Longwood. We know they'll be successful and we wish them the best in the future."
Longwood closes out the regular season with two road contests beginning Thursday at Presbyterian and ending Saturday at Gardner-Webb. First draw against the Blue Hose from Clinton, S.C. is set for 4 p.m. and will be live streamed on the Big South Network.
