FARMVILLE, Va. – The bottom half of the Longwood women's tennis rotation breezed through their N.C. Central counterparts with straight-set wins to sweep 4-0 and get back in the win column Saturday afternoon from the H-SC Tennis Courts.
After taking the doubles point with wins at courts two and three, seniors
Paloma Alatorre and
Mason Thomas created separation and gave the Lancers (4-12, 0-6) a 3-0 lead with 6-0, 6-0 shutouts on courts four and five, allowing
Fallon Burger to clinch the match 6-2, 6-0.
Alatorre's dominant shutout win was her first at court four this campaign, and her sixth overall. Saturday's win came after Alatorre had to retire in her last match at George Mason due to a sprained ankle she fought through against Presbyterian the day before.
Meanwhile, Thomas extended her season-high streak to six consecutive wins and pushed her record at court five to a perfect 4-0. Thomas leads the Lancers in singles wins with 10, and shares 11 doubles wins with fellow senior
Anna Pelak after their 6-0 shutout Saturday afternoon.
The tandem of Pelak and Thomas continued their anchor status at court three, winning their sixth-straight doubles match and sit 11-3 on the season.
A native of Fort Myers, Fla., Burger has won back-to-back singles matches to push her record at court six above the .500 mark at 6-5. After serving primarily as the ace last season as a freshman, Burger has notched a career-best eight singles wins this season, splitting time at courts four, five and six.
In doubles play, Pelak and Thomas set the tone with a 6-0 shutout before Alatorre and freshman
Marija Venta battled for a 6-3 win at court two, securing the 1-0 Lancer lead. The win from Alatorre/Venta brings the duo's record back to a .500 clip at 4-4.
N.C. Central (2-14) was able to avoid sweeps at every court, grabbing a 6-1 win at the first doubles court over Burger and
Jamie Breunig, but were unable to breakthrough anywhere in singles play.
Longwood gets a full week off before welcoming Chowan on Saturday, April 8 when seniors
Paloma Alatorre,
Anna Pelak and
Mason Thomas will be recognized on Senior Day. Match time is set for 12 p.m. from the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.
