SAVANNAH, Ga. – Antwaun Tucker,
Michael Osinski, and
Justin Mitchell each had multi-hit games to back a solid outing by the pitching staff as Longwood won the series at Savannah State with a 7-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Tiger Baseball Field.
Tucker had a strong game out of the two-hole as the freshman outfielder ripped a pair of doubles in the win for Longwood (4-7). Tucker, Mitchell, and Osinski each picked up two hits with an RBI and scored a run while
Alex Lewis hit a two-run home run for the Lancers, the first of the season for the senior captain. Every Lancer starter reached safely and eight of nine starters picked up a hit in the win at Savannah State (6-5).
"Offensively we got contributions from everyone," Longwood head coach
Ryan Mau said. "Mitchell and Lewis started their own two-out rally to get us on the board in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning Sammy [Miller] executed a perfect squeeze to grab a run, followed by Tucker's big double."
Mitchell and Osinski continue to rake as the duo has combined for 10 multi-hit games on the season.
The middle three hitters in the Lancer order— Osinski, Mitchell, and Lewis – are all hitting better than .300 on the season and have combined for five of the team's seven home runs. Osinski leads the Big South with 15 RBI while Mitchell and Lewis are second on the team with eight each. Those three Lancers have picked up 31 of the team's 55 RBI.
Cody Wager (1-2) picked up the win for the Lancers, holding Savannah State to three runs in 5.1 innings on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Austin Robinson (0-1) was hit with the loss for Savannah State after being tagged with five runs in 7.1 innings of work.
Tyler Morgan picked up the save by getting the final six outs, his first of the season.
"Wager had all three pitches going today and was able to give us a good start," Mau said. "Morgan had pinpoint command with the fastball and was attacking hitters. He was in total control at the back end of the game."
Morgan, a freshman right-hander, tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks allowed. The Ashland, Va., native has not allowed an earned run on the season. Morgan has 12 strikeouts and four walks issued in 10.0 innings across four outings.
Longwood led 2-0 following Lewis' two-run homer in the fourth inning and doubled the lead with two more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Tucker's RBI double, his second two-base hit of the day. Savannah State struck back with three runs in the home half of the sixth inning, getting the potential tying run to third base with the bases loaded before Catlin got Longwood out of the inning with the lead intact.
The Lancers then added onto their lead in the eighth inning after Osinski tripled and Mitchell brought him in with a single. Osinski picked up a two-run single in the ninth inning to turn a 5-3 lead to 7-3 and provide the Lancers insurance runs at the end.
"We did a great job of tacking on runs late, which gave us a little extra breathing room," Mau said. "Our team is starting to take steps in the right direction. With our first series win in hand, we must now look to finish the weekend the right way."
Longwood can earn its first series sweep of the season with a win Sunday afternoon. The Lancers turn to senior right-hander
Tyler Wirsu (0-1) who will be opposed by Savannah State freshman righty Alec Kliphouse. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Tiger Baseball Stadium.
