Three-Set Wins At Top Of Rotation Key George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Fueled by a pair of aces in Sydney Green and Morgan Yang, George Mason was able to take two three-set matches in singles play to outlast the Longwood women's tennis team Sunday afternoon, 5-2.

Senior Morgan Yang played closer at court two outlasting Longwood freshman Marija Venta in a third set tiebreak 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) to push the George Mason lead to 4-1 and clinch the nonconference bout. After splitting the first two sets with Venta, Yang was able to grind out the tiebreak in a third set to snap back-to-back losses from the Patriots.

Sophomore ace Green also took a three-set win in comeback fashion after dropping set one to Longwood's Jamie Breunig 6-7 (6-8) in a tiebreak. Green shook off the tiebreak loss and took sets two and three 6-3, 6-2 to give the Patriots their fifth and final point of the match.

Seniors Mason Thomas and Anna Pelak continued their dominance at the third doubles court, securing a 6-3 win and their 10th as a tandem in 2017.

Thomas also stretched her singles win streak to five straight with a grinding three-set comeback at court five over counterpart Liz Lowe 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-1. The senior has enjoyed the longest win streak by a Lancer this season and has won four in straight-sets, two coming in 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.

A product of Buchanan Dam, Texas, Thomas had a three match win streak coming into the weekend before wins over counterparts from Presbyterian and George Mason at court five.

Fallon Burger, who had a three match win streak coming into the weekend as well, got back into the win column with a 6-4, 6-3 win at court six to split the weekend at 1-1.

Longwood stays out of conference to take on another Commonwealth foe James Madison for a Friday afternoon affair. Match time is set for 4 p.m. from Harrisonburg, Va.
