FARMVILLE, Va. - George Mason got nine combined goals from Alexa McGovern and Melissa Lobaccaro, erasing a seven-goal day from Longwood's
Cassie Angeles in a 23-13 charge past the Longwood women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Four first half goals from McGovern led a George Mason attack that tallied 15 goals in the opening 30 minutes, providing plenty of cushion down the stretch.
"Although the result wasn't what we wanted today, we can still learn from this game," said head coach
Elaine Jones.
A product of Sykesville, Md., McGovern got things rolling with the first two tallies of the afternoon as the Patriots tickled the twine four times before
Cassie Angeles scored her first of a career-high seven goals to stop the run. McGovern finished the day with five goals while senior midfielder Lobaccaro added four.Â
After scoring four goals in the home opener against George Washington, Angeles found the back of the net a career-best seven times, five coming in the second half, accounting for more than half of the Lancer strikes. Angeles' seven goals stretches her streak to four consecutive games with a tally, while also positioning herself as the top scorer on the team with 19 tally marks just ahead of
Stephanie Roberts' 18 goals.
Roberts paced the Lancers with two assists and picked up a team-best three ground balls, while freshman
Dana Joss netted her first career hat trick, scoring three goals on three shots and winning a team-high six draw controls.
Longwood was without
Riley Dolan and Andie deCelis due to injuries sustained over the past week, forcing freshmen and sophomores to step up and carry a Lancer attack that ranks among the best in the Big South.
"Due to injuries to our upperclassmen, our freshmen and sophomores have gained valuable playing time and experience, and after a challenging slate of nonconference games, they know what areas they need to improve in order to be more successful," Jones said.Â
The Patriots found the back of the net 23 times on just 29 shots for a blazing .793 clip, and won the battle of draw controls 22-15.
McGovern and Lobaccaro headlined a George Mason attack that saw 11 different goal scorers and four hat tricks – McGovern, Lobaccaro, Hailey Johnson and Jordan Sdanowich. McGovern also dominated in the midfield with a game-high 11 draw controls and tied for the most ground balls with two.
Four Patriots also picked up multiple assists, as Chachi Kelehan, Kelley Reilly, Brooke Lorber and Taylor Altomare combined for eight of their 10 total assists on the afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper
Chelsea DiIonno picked up the lone two Lancer saves in her 33 minutes of relief duty for
Imani West who got the start between the pipes. The loss snapped a three-game streak of double digit save performances from West who is among the best Big South goalkeepers in 2017.
"We look forward to using this week to bolster our overall team play as we now move into the conference part of our season," Jones said.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak to open the home slate for Longwood, who hits the road to begin conference play at Radford next weekend. First draw on Saturday, April 1 is set to go up at 2Â p.m.
