RADFORD, Va. – Freshmen attackers
Lexi Davis,
Molly Barkman and
Kaitlin Luccarelli provided the Lancer attack with plenty of ammunition to power a 19-16 win over Big South rival Radford, and open conference play 1-0 for the second consecutive season.
Barkman won eight draw controls, scored two goals and corralled four ground balls while Davis scored two goals and added a career-best six assists in the win. Luccarelli tied her career-best with four goals and added three assists, two coming in the decisive second half.
"I'm proud of our effort today in getting a positive result on the road against a gritty conference opponent," said fifth-year head coach
Elaine Jones, who has led the Lancers to a .500 record or better in her first four seasons on campus. "The team worked hard all game and really earned this first conference win."
Longwood fired away 41 shots on the afternoon, the most since a 44-shot performance against Howard in late February. Saturday's high-scoring affair was also the highest goal total since the win over Howard, a game in which the Lancers netted 24 goals.
The Lancers won the battle of shots (41-29), ground balls (29-20), turnovers (15-21), caused turnovers (11-9) and clears (20-19), snapping a three-game skid over the final stages of nonconference play.
"They kept up their intensity level and were able to execute our game plan," Jones said.
After her first career hat trick and six draw controls earned her Big South Freshman of the Week, midfielder
Dana Joss tallied another hat trick and assisted on a Davis first half goal in the win. Joss' third and final tally of the day would turn out to be the game-winning goal, her first for the blue and white, as she broke a 12-12 tie and gave Longwood a lead it would hold down the stretch.
Joss' hat trick gives her 10 tally marks on the season to continue her hot-streak into conference play with all 10 goals coming in the past four contests.
Longwood midfielder
Stephanie Roberts continued her breakout sophomore season, scoring a team-best four goals and collecting five ground balls while forcing a turnover on the defensive end. Roberts, who was in the top-10 of the Big South in shots and goals heading into Saturday's action, added to her team-best 26 goals and cemented herself in the top five of the Big South.
Sophomore defender
Cassie Angeles tickled the twine three times to bring her season total to 23 after a seven-goal performance against George Mason last week. Angeles also collected a season-high six ground balls, shattering her previous-best of two.
Saturday's 19-goal outburst was the most for the Lancers in a Big South game since a 21-7 victory over the Highlanders last season in Farmville, Va.
Radford was led by Adrian Rius' career-best five-goal performance, while Lindsey Carroll added three assists in the losing effort.
Longwood welcomes another rival in Liberty Wednesday, April 5 for a 4 p.m. showdown from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The game will be available through live streaming on the Big South Network.
"We will enjoy the win today before we get back on the field to prepare for Liberty," Jones said.
