RADFORD, Va. – Zach Ridgely held Longwood in check across 7.2 scoreless innings as Radford topped Longwood, 10-0, Friday night at Radford Baseball Stadium.
Â
Longwood (8-14, 2-2 Big South) was held to three hits in the loss by Radford's ace, Ridgely, as the Highlanders (9-12, 1-0 Big South) took the first game of the series behind his quality start. Ridgely (3-3) spun 7.2 scoreless innings with a career high 11 strikeouts.
Â
"It was a disappointing night for us all around," Longwood head coach
Ryan Mau said. "We didn't put many quality at-bats together, but that had a lot to do with Ridgely. He had all three pitches going and it was tough to put good swings on him."
Â
Radford took control of the game with a five-run fifth inning. Entering the frame with a 2-0 lead, the Highlanders took advantage of Longwood mistakes to create separation. Radford scored five runs on two hits, two errors, and four walks in the inning with one hit batter.
Â
"We handed away too many free passes and didn't make the defensive plays we needed to minimize big damage," Mau said.
Â
Devin Gould (1-3) tied his career high with seven strikeouts, but took the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits and six walks in 4.1 innings of work.
Â
Radford was led at the plate by Jonathan Gonzalez, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Radford picked up nine hits in the win.
Â
Sammy Miller reached a pair of times in the loss, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk. The junior center fielder has reached in 16 consecutive games. Miller also stole a pair of bases and is second in the Big South with 13 swipes on the season.
Â
Longwood and Radford play a doubleheader Saturday to conclude the three-game set.
Cody Wager (3-2) is set to take the hill for Longwood in the first game of the doubleheader, opposite of Radford senior right-hander Danny Hrbek (2-3). First pitch in the first game of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Radford Baseball Stadium.
