Seven-Run Sixth Pushes Campbell Past Lancers, 9-2

Longwood Drops Just Their Sixth Big South Series Since Joining Big South in 2013

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A seven-run sixth inning and a combined five RBI from Campbell's Amber Schisler and Caroline Smith led the Camels to a 9-2 series-clinching win over the Longwood softball team in the rubber game in the series Sunday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

In a sixth inning where the Camels batted around, Campbell strung together had the first three batters of the inning reach base safely, before Jessica Anderson brought home Megan Mozingo to give the Camels their first lead of the game. Campbell added six more runs in the game, highlighted by a Smith two-run home run and a Schisler RBI single.

Campbell (17-15, 2-1 Big South) wins their first series against the Lancers since Longwood (8-16, 1-2 Big South) joined the Big South, as the Lancers drop their sixth series in five seasons within the conference. Campbell becomes just the third current Big South school to earn a series win over Longwood, joining Charleston Southern and Presbyterian, as well as former Big South member Coastal Carolina.

"We need to make our own changes as a group, because we felt like the games this weekend told us that our approach has to be different at practice in terms of the things we have to do and changes we have to make," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley.

Sydney Gay (7-8) got her second start of the weekend in the circle and took the loss, giving up nine runs, four earned, on 10 hits while walking four and striking out five.

The heart of the Campbell order – Taesha Dubois, Amber Schisler and Caroline Smith – combined for six of Campbell's 10 hits, along with five runs and five RBI. Jessica Anderson also had a two-hit day at the plate with a run scored, along with an RBI.

Holly Brooks earned the start for the Camels, tossing two scoreless innings while giving up a pair of hits. She was relieved by Megan Richards, who tossed two innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits.

Katie Baker (7-6) earned the win, pitching two innings in relief of Richards. She gave up just one hit, while striking out a pair. Schisler pitched a clean final inning, retiring the side on five pitches, to seal the win for Campbell.

Kaylynn Batten led the Lancers at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance, as she was one of six Lancers to record a hit.
Longwood had the leadoff batter get aboard in the first four innings and left a total of nine on base, compared to just five batters from Campbell.

The two teams each scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, with Longwood scoring on a Jessica Smith RBI single to bring home Glenn Walters, before reached on an error to score Smith from second.

Campbell answered in the home half of the frame with an RBI triple down the right field line from Amber Schisler, before Caroline Smith brought her home one batter later with a hit back up the middle.

"Our desire is to be a championship caliber team and we aren't their yet, but we're going to get back to work and get better for Wednesday," Riley said.

Longwood returns to Lancer Field for a midweek doubleheader against Towson Wednesday, March 22. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., with the first game on Kickin' Country 92.9 WVHL.
