Clark’s Five-Hit Day Aids Lancers to DH Sweep

Jordan Clark Posted Five Hits, Five RBI in Longwood's 5-4, 8-2 Wins Over Towson

FARMVILLE, Va. – A five-hit, five RBI day for sophomore Jordan Clark led Longwood to a doubleheader sweep over Towson Wednesday afternoon at Lancer Field.

Clark ripped off five hits in her eight at-bats throughout the two games with a career-high three hits coming in a 5-4 comeback win over the Tigers (9-13) in game one of the day, before the Longwood (10-16) center fielder followed that performance with a 2-for-4 showing with four RBI and two runs scored in the squad's 8-2 win in the finale.

"We're happy to come out with two wins today on our home field," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley. "We had a lot of support from our fans, including several of the other teams in our athletic department. It was great to see everybody come out and we're appreciative of everyone's support."

Coming into the day on a team-leading five game hit streak, Clark extended that streak and was a triple away from the cycle throughout the two games, as she had a game-tying RBI double in game one, before clubbing her first career home run in game two. Her four RBI in the game two also marked a career-best for the Midlothian, Va., product, who raised her average to a team-leading .305 on the season.

"I felt confident coming into the day," Clark said. "I went up looking to be aggressive and for a pitch to hit. I felt like I was seeing it well throughout."

Clark was one of five Lancers to record multiple hits throughout the afternoon. She was joined by Karleigh Donovan with a trio of hits along with two RBI and two runs scored, while Justina Augustine also had a three-hit day with a run scored. Jessica Smith and Krista Kelly added a pair of hits, as the Lancers combined for 19 hits throughout the two games.

"We've made a lot of progress of late in terms of taking better swings and being aggressive on the base paths to create runs," Riley said. "Jordan was terrific today. We have a lot of confidence in her in terms of giving herself a chance to get a hit each time she's up."

Senior Elizabeth McCarthy (2-6) picked up the win in game one of the day to climb to within one win (63) of matching Jennifer Potts for third all-time in career wins with 64. In addition, McCarthy added three strikeouts in the game, as she claws to within 12 strikeouts of tying Briana Wells strikeout record.

In addition, Sydney Gay (8-8) picked up the win in game two, while Sydney Mundell picked up a save in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Longwood returns to the diamond in six days and will remain out of conference by welcoming Virginia to Lancer Field March 28. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., with both games of the doubleheader scheduled to air on the Big South Network.

Longwood 5, Towson 4
Longwood erased two deficits, including a three-run deficit, as Kaylynn Batten recorded the go-ahead two-RBI double in the fourth inning to lead Longwood to a 5-4 comeback win over Towson in the opening game of the day.

Batten was able to battle back from a 1-2 count with two out in the inning to make the count full and ripped the eighth pitch of her at-bat down the left field line to plate Smith and Glenn Walters and give the Lancers their first lead of the day.

That hit came one inning after Longwood was able to erase a three-run deficit, as the Lancers strung together four hits throughout the three-run third inning and batted around the lineup. Clark – who had a career-high three hits in the game – tied the game with an RBI double, one of two extra base hits for the sophomore outfielder.

With her three hits, Clark led the Longwood effort offensively, as Donovan also added a pair of hits to record her team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the season. Batten finished with a team-best three RBI while Jessica Smith added a pair of hits and runs scored.

McCarthy (2-6) earned her second win in her last three appearances, tossing 5.1 innings and giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits. She also added a pair of walks and struck out three, as she threw 76 pitches, 48 for strikes. Mundell picked up her first save of the season, not allowing a baserunner in 1.2 innings.

"Biz pitched well," Riley said. "She gave up the two home runs, but she came back after the two home runs and did an excellent job. We've talked about responding in a positive manner when we're faced with adversity and I thought Biz did a really nice job of that today."

Kendyl Scott led the Tigers with a 3-for-4 day, including an RBI and two runs scored. Shelby Stracher also went deep for Towson, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Megan Dejter (3-7) took the loss, going 6.0 innings and giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits and two walks. She also struck out a pair of batters, while throwing 102 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Longwood 8, Towson 2
A four-run first inning and a four-RBI game for Clark backed a strong pitching performance from Gay to lift Longwood to an 8-2 victory in the final game of the afternoon.

Clark belted her first career blast in the fourth inning to back the two RBI single she recorded in the first inning to finish the game with a career-high four RBI. Her four RBI game is the second most for a Longwood player this season, one shy of matching the five RBI posted by Kelly against George Washington at the UNCG Invitational.

"It felt good off the bat," Clark said. "I just went up looking to stay relaxed and for a good pitch to hit."

Clark was one of two Lancers to finish with multi-hit games, as Augustine finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Gay picked up her eighth win of the season, as she went 5.0 innings while giving up one run on two hits. She also walked a pair and struck out a pair of Tigers. Mundell came on to pitch the final inning, giving up one unearned run on three hits.

Longwood started fast in game two with the first five batters each reaching base safely. Clark gave Longwood the lead with a two RBI single to right center, before Kelsey Sweeney followed with an RBI single to quickly put Longwood ahead 3-0. The Lancers went on to add a fourth run, as Clark advanced home on a double steal.

Following a Donovan RBI single to score Kelly from second, Clark belted the second pitch she saw over the wall in left center field for her first career home run.

Julia Smith-Harrington (6-6) took the loss, tossing 5.0 innings while being tagged for eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits and four walks. She also added five strikeouts.

Four different Tigers recorded a hit, as Shelby Stratcher led the way with a 2-for-3 afternoon.
