Longwood, Campbell Split Saturday Doubleheader

Longwood Wins Game One, 7-6, in 10 Innings, Before Campbell Rallies in Game Two, 10-9

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A thrilling 10 inning win for the Longwood softball team in game one of the day followed by a walk-off single from Campbell in the nightcap helped the two teams split a doubleheader to open Big South play Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Kasey Carr scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning of game one to help the Lancers (8-15, 1-1 Big South) to a 7-6 win, before Campbell (16-15, 1-1 Big South) was able to rally from an 8-2 deficit to walk-off a 10-9 winner in the second game of the day.

"We had a game that was under control get away from us tonight," said head coach Kathy Riley. "We just didn't play well defensively. We were able to hit well and we pitched well for the most part. We weren't able to recover from the pressure that we put on ourselves with an 8-2 lead."

Longwood was led offensively by Carr, Justina Augustine and Kelsey Sweeney, who each collected four hits throughout the two games. In addition, Krista Kelly and Kaylynn Batten had three hits apiece, while Jordan Clark and Haleigh Kilby had a hit in each of the two games.

With her win in the opening game of the series, Elizabeth McCarthy (1-6) earns her first win of the season and moved to solo fourth all-time in Longwood history with her 62 career wins. The win for the two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year brings her to within 11 wins of joining Jen Steele second-place all-time on the list.

The two teams will return to the field Sunday afternoon for the rubber game of the series. That game is set for a 1 p.m., first pitch.

Longwood 7, Campbell 6 (10)
In an offensive onslaught that saw the two teams combine for 29 hits, Longwood gutted out a 7-6 win over Campbell in 10 innings in its Big South opener Saturday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Five different Lancers recorded multi-hit games, as Longwood recorded a season-high 14 hits. The offensive effort was led by a 3-for-3 performance from Kasey Carr, who swiped second and scored the game-winning run on an error. In addition, Kelsey Sweeney recorded a trio of hits while Justina Augustine, Kaylynn Batten and Krista Kelly each added a pair of hits.

Longwood (8-14) wins its Big South opener for the fourth time in five seasons since joining the league and looks to win its fifth straight series in the conference-opener. The win for the Lancers also marks the second this season in extra innings, after Longwood's win over Samford earlier this season.

Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year Elizabeth McCarthy (1-5) picked up her first win of the season, coming on relief for Sydney Gay and throwing 3.2 innings while allowing one run on two hits. She also struck out a trio of batters.

McCarthy and the Longwood defense was able to escape a bases loaded, no out jam in the eighth inning after Taesha Duboise singled in between a pair of walks. McCarthy was able to induce a trio of force plays to get out of the jam and keep the score tied.

Longwood had four different leads throughout the game, including two in extra innings, but Campbell was able to come back each time. The teams traded runs in the ninth inning after Sweeney's RBI double was answered by a solo shot from Caroline Smith.

Sydney Gay earned the no decision in the start, going 6.1 innings and giving up five runs on 13 hits while walking three and striking out a pair. The 13 hits against Gay marked the most given up by the reigning Big South Tournament MVP.

Meanwhile, freshman Megan Richards got the start for the Lancers and also picked up the no decision. Richards gave up five runs as well, while allowing seven Longwood hits. Big South Player of the Year Amber Schisler relieved her in the circle and went 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on four hits in the loss.

Campbell 10, Longwood 9
Campbell's Megan Mozingo hit a walk off single off the top of the wall in right field to lift the Camels to a 10-9 comeback win in the nightcap of the day.
Mozingo went 3-for-5 at the plate, as she was one of two Camels to record multi-hit games.

In her first career start at Longwood, Sydney Mundell tossed 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters. Mundell threw a career-best 101 pitches, 56 for strikes in her longest career appearance.

Elizabeth McCarthy relieved Mundell in the fifth inning in the midst of a Campbell comeback. She took the loss, allowing three runs, none earned, on four hits and two walks. She also struck out one batter.

Katie Baker got the start for Campbell giving up seven runs, all earned, in four innings, while walking four and striking out five. She was relieved by Amber Schisler 6-3), who picked up the win, throwing
