FARMVILLE, VA. – Campbell starting pitchers Grant Yost and Michael Horrell each threw complete games as Campbell swept a doubleheader, 6-3 in game one and 2-0 in game two, to take two out of three games in the series against Longwood Sunday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The Lancers were held to 12 hits in the losses to Campbell (22-19, 9-6 Big South). Longwood (23-18, 8-7 Big South) was outhit 17-12 in the two games.
"I thought their starting three were all really good, they kept us off balance and we weren't able to get many good swings off," Longwood head coach
Ryan Mau said after the doubleheader. "Offensively we just weren't able to get anything going today and that was really disappointing."
Yost (6-2) tossed a complete game in game one with three runs, two earned, allowed on six hits with nine strikeouts. Horrell (4-4) spread six hits across nine shutout innings with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in his game two win.
Cody Wager (2-3) took the loss in the first game of the two despite striking out four batters out of the bullpen. Wager took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Luke Simpson (0-2) took the loss in game two despite a quality start.
Simpson was dominant in a pitchers' duel in the rubber match of the three-game set and spread seven hits across 7.1 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts to a pair of walks. The quality start was the third of the season for Simpson.
"
Luke Simpson was stellar," Mau said. "I'm really excited to see him back in his old form. His performance today shows a lot of promise going forward."
Simpson pitched into the eighth inning and allowed a lead-off single, but recorded an out before giving way to right-handed relief pitcher
Devin Gould. Two runs scored in the inning on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, the first run charged to Simpson.
"We have to get a better performance out of the bullpen there," Mau said.
Ryan Jones got the final out of the inning and pitched the rest of the way for Longwood in the series finale.
"I was pleased with the way
Ryan Jones continues to throw the ball extremely well," Mau said.
Jones, who picked up the win in Saturday's opening game of the series, pitched 1.1 innings with four strikeouts and one runner allowed on a hit by pitch.
In the losses, the top of the order stood out at the plate for Longwood.
C.J. Roth,
Connar Bastaich, and
Alex Lewis each had hits in both ends of the doubleheader. The two, three, and four hitters in the order combined for six hits Sunday. Roth had a pair of hits in game one, while Bastaich had a multi-hit game in game two.
Bastaich continues to swing a hot bat for Longwood. The senior first baseman has hits in each of his last nine games. During that stretch Bastaich is hitting .436 (17-for-39) with eight RBI and five runs scored. The senior is second on the team with a .331 batting average.
Drew Butler and Anthony Lopez wore out Longwood with their performances at the plate in the series. Lopez and Butler each had a pair of hits in game two of the doubleheader. Butler had a series-high six hits in the three games.
Game one of the doubleheader started in favor of the Lancers. After trailing 1-0 on a first-inning run for the Camels, Longwood struck with three of its own. Roth, who was 2-for-4 in the first game of the day, started the rally with a one-out single, followed by singles from Bastaich and Lewis. The single by Lewis brought in the first run of the day for Longwood, plating Roth, the senior captain.
Michael Osinski gave Longwood its first lead of the day on a sacrifice fly that allowed Bastaich to score from third. Two batters later,
Carlos Garrido hit a single that scored Lewis and gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead.
After Longwood's three-run rally, Yost settled in and only allowed four base runners the rest of the way, two singles and two hit batters, as he picked up his fourth consecutive complete game. The Camels tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Brian Taylor, his third of the season. Campbell then rallied for single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth to down Longwood.
Game two of the doubleheader was a true pitchers' duel. Neither starter allowed a runner to third base while in the game. Simpson exited with a man on first base and one out. The lead-off hit he allowed turned into a run after a pair of walks and a wild pitch by Gould. On the other side, Horrell cruised after Campbell gave him the lead, retiring the final nine batters he faced.
Horrell, like Yost, had entered fresh off a complete game and went the distance for a second time this season on Sunday. Horrell picked up the first complete game shutout for a Campbell pitcher since 2014.
The Lancers dropped to 18-7 at home with the two defeats in the penultimate home series, but still sit one victory shy of setting a new Division-I era home win record. Longwood is currently tied with the 2010 team, which went 18-10 in Farmville. The Lancers next play at home May 6 when they welcome in UNC Asheville for a three-game conference series.
Longwood's losses dropped the Lancers out of third place in the Big South. Longwood plays a single game at Norfolk State Tuesday, concluding a home-and-home season series with the Spartans before returning to conference play Friday.
"We'll look to learn from this, go back to work, and try to get ourselves going on Tuesday," Mau said.
First pitch at Norfolk State on Tuesday is set for 5 p.m.
