Adams, Batten Lead Lancers Past Campbell, 10-4

Elizabeth McCarthy Moves into Second All-Time on Longwood's Strikeout List

FARMVILLE, Va. – Led by a 3-for-4 performance at the plate from Carly Adams and a four-RBI day for freshman Kaylynn Batten, the Longwood softball team completed a three-game sweep of Campbell with a 10-4 win in the series finale Saturday at Lancer Field.

Adams and Batten spearheaded the Longwood offense which finished the day with a season-high 13 hits and scored in all but one inning. Along with Adams and Batten, Longwood had a total of four players with multiple hits in the game, including Kelsey Sweeney and Mariah Ellis.

"Some of the areas we wanted to improve on, we got better as the weekend progressed," said head coach Kathy Riley. "It was nice for us to strike the ball better as a group. Today, I thought Campbell came out and attacked the ball and they were able to get some runs. Each time they scored, we did a good job of responding the next time we came up to bat."

For Adams, it was her best day of the season and was part of a strong overall weekend for the senior second baseman. Adams, along with Sweeney and Emily Murphy each notched hits in each game played throughout Friday and Saturday and finished with five hits and three RBI each. In addition, Adams and Sweeney each notched their first home run of the season, while Adams also had a double.

"Being out for a few games earlier in the year and coming back to help my team out felt good," Adams said of her 3-for-4 performance with a career-high three runs scored. "Being able to come back and impact the game like that today was much needed."

For Batten, it marked her second career game with three or more RBI, as she also finished with three in her home debut against Hartford. It also marked the first four-RBI day for a Longwood player this season.

In the circle, Elizabeth McCarthy (7-5) picked up her second straight win, coming on in relief in the third inning for Sydney Gay. McCarthy didn't allow a run to score despite giving up five hits and a walk in 3.2 innings. She also struck out seven Camels, moving into second all-time in Longwood's career strikeout list and passing her former assistant coach Jen Steele.

McCarthy became the third Longwood pitcher to eclipse the 400 strikeout mark Friday night in Longwood's doubleheader sweep, before moving past Steele and into second all-time with her performance Saturday. McCarthy now sits 158 strikeouts of the school's all-time record of 572 set by Brianna Wells, as well as ranking among the top-10 in Big South history in career strikeouts.

With her performance, McCarthy moved ahead of Gay and leads the Big South with a 2.13 ERA this season. The pair – who ranks as the top-two ERA's in the Big South this season – has been lights out in the circle, leading the four-man Longwood pitching staff to a Big South-best 2.16 ERA.

"We have a luxury with all four of our pitchers," Riley said. "Yesterday, we were able to use all four of them and they were each effective. Right now, I feel we may have the best one-two combination in the conference, but I think we certainly have the best four-man pitching staff in the league. We have a lot of confidence in all of them right now."

Gay and McCarthy combined for 13 strikeouts in the game, as Gay started and allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk. She also finished with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Campbell's Amber Schisler and Rachel McCollum combined to go 6-for-7 at the plate with three home runs to finish with six of Campbell's eight hits on the day. Schisler adds to her total to take the Big South lead with 11 round-trippers, while McCollum has now hit seven home runs to rank fourth in the league.

Longwood finished the afternoon hitting a season-best three home runs, as Adams, Ellis and Jamie Barbour all went deep. For Ellis, it marked her first multi-hit game, as she hit a home run for the second straight day and had an infield single to go along with it.

Meanwhile, Glenn Walters extended her reached base streak to 22 games, going back to last season at the Knoxville Regional, while Emily Murphy, Adams and Sweeney extended their hitting streak to four straight games.

Courtney Roberts (4-3) suffered the loss for the Camels, as she went 3.1 innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. Schisler started the game and gave up four runs on nine hits, while also walking a pair of batters.

The win for the Lancers gives the squad a sweep over the Camels for the first time since joining the Big South. Longwood, who has won 22-of-25 series since entering the league and has won nine straight going back to the 2014 season, has now swept each Big South member outside of Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian and Winthrop.

For Saturday's game, the Lancers joined with Longwood baseball and men's tennis team to wear gold shoelaces to team with "Go4theGoal" to raise awareness and support for pediatric cancer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The three teams donated funds and wore gold shoelaces in competition throughout the weekend to raise awareness.  Of the funds used to buy the laces, 80% will go back to help kids with cancer and their families in the area the funds are raised.

"It was an opportunity for us to give back and the money we raised stayed local in Virginia," said assistant coach Kayla Miller, who organized the effort. "It was a way for us to show our support and we were happy to be part of it."

Longwood returns to Lancer Field Wednesday, March 23 to host its second ACC-foe of the season in Virginia in a midweek doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

"I thought we played well for our first conference series," Adams said. "I think we'll be able to ride the momentum from this weekend into Wednesday when Virginia comes here. I think we'll have a lot of confidence in those games in front of our home crowd."
