FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Glenn Walters combined for a 3-of-8 performance at the plate with three extra base hits, three runs scored and two RBI, as Longwood picked up a 2-1 win over Monmouth and a 7-4 victory over Hartford Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field on day two of the Longwood Spring Fling.

"We worked our way through in some spots and we found out a little more about ourselves, some of the things we have to work on and the things we have to do to become a really, really good team," said head coach Kathy Riley. "We're happy with the wins, but I know we can play better softball. Our goal is to come out tomorrow and play much better."

Walters tripled in game one of the day against Monmouth and scored a run, before recording a double and her first home run of the season in game two of the day against Hartford. In addition to Walters, Karleigh Donovan and Taylor Hedrick each recorded a pair of hits in the second game against Hartford, with Donovan bringing home a run.

"I just saw the ball, cleared my mind and tried to hit it hard," Walters said. "I needed to be a leadoff hitter, get on base and set the tone."

In the circle, Sydney Gay (2-0) picked up her second career victory in her first start at Longwood in the Lancers' first contest against Monmouth. Gay worked a complete game and was aided by a strong Longwood defense.

Jenna Carnes (1-0) picked up her first victory of the season against Hartford, as she worked five innings. Elizabeth McCarthy picked up the save after coming on with two on and no out in the final inning.

"Our pitching has been the strength of our team so far," Riley said. "I also thought Sydney Gay pitched a fine game in the first game today."

Walters was one of three Lancers to extend their reached base streak to seven games, as she was joined by Kaylynn Batten and Emily Murphy. In addition, Murphy went 2-for-4 throughout the day to keep her team-leading six game hit streak alive.

Longwood (5-2) extends its win streak to three games and has won five of its last six contests. The Lancers look to keep the momentum going, as the squad completes play in the Longwood Spring Fling Sunday, Feb. 28. The final day is set to get underway at 10 a.m., with Longwood set to play Hartford at 12 p.m., before taking on Monmouth in the tournament finale.

"Our two goals for tomorrow are to put ourselves, psychologically, in the best positions to play well and also try to execute hitting earlier in the count and with people on base," Riley said.

Longwood 2, Monmouth 1
Gay made her first career start in the circle and picked up her second career victory, as Longwood picked up a 2-1 victory over Monmouth in the first contest of the day.

Gay pitched a complete game, holding the Hawks to one run on five hits and a pair of walks. She recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in the contest, as the rookie is up to 21 strikeouts this season in 17.2 innings pitched. The Carrollton, Va., product allowed just two hits after the third inning in the game.
"It feels great to just come out on top," Gay said. "I felt a little more relaxed as the game went along."

Jordan Clark drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, bringing home Barbour who reached base on an error. Two innings prior, Walters sparked the Longwood offense with a leadoff triple, before coming home two batters later on a Murphy single back up the middle.

Sydney Underhill (0-2) took the loss for Monmouth (0-2). She went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and five walks. Amanda Riley came on in relief and didn't allow a hit, while walking one batter.

After Gay worked a three-up, three-down first inning, Monmouth responded with the game's first run in the second frame. After Justene Reyes recorded a one-out double, Ashalynn Umiamaka came through two batters later with a single to left field to score Reyes.

"I wasn't really nervous, just tense coming in," Gay said. "I was able to settle down after the second and third inning and get more comfortable."

Gay settled down after giving up the run, getting 14 of the next 17 Monmouth batters out through the sixth inning and allowed just two hits through that stretch.

Walters jumpstarted the Longwood offense in the bottom of the third with a leadoff triple to record Longwood's first hit of the day. She was brought home by Murphy, who has a team-high nine hits this season.

Clark added the go ahead run one inning later after Barbour and Haleigh Kilby each reached base on a pair of Monmouth errors. Clark made the Hawks pay by delivering a clutch RBI single back up the middle to score Barbour from second base.

Monmouth made its final push in the seventh inning, as Brooke Redmond reached on an error to represent the tying run and Emma Hill followed two batters later with a two-out single to left. Gay then got Howerth to pop out to Murphy at shortstop to seal the victory.

Longwood 7, Hartford 4
A 2-for-4 performance from Walters, along with a three-run fifth aided Longwood to a 7-4 victory over Hartford in its final game of the day.

Walters just missed her first home run of the day in the top of the first, recording a leadoff triple. However, in her next at-bat one inning later, Walters delivered with a two-run blast to left center for her first of the season. It was all part of a game where the sophomore scored a pair of runs to go along with her two RBI.
 "
A product of Six Mile, S.C., Carnes picked up her first victory of the campaign, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk. The junior also posted a strikeout in her first start of the season.

"I'm glad to have a win under my belt," Carnes said. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates backing me up defensively and offensively."

Sydney Mundell made her first appearance at Lancer Field, working the sixth inning and coming on for the seventh. She allowed two hits and walked a batter in her second career appearance.

After throwing a gem Friday night, McCarthy came on with two on and no out in the seventh inning to pick up the save. She struck out all three of the batters she faced.

Kelsey Bird (0-2) took the loss, relieving starter Melissa Pereira and tossing 2.0 innings. She gave up four runs on three hits and five walks, while striking out just one batter she faced. In the start, Pereira worked 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

After Hartford took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Longwood – fueled by the leadoff Walters – responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, as Batten brought her home later in the inning with an sacrifice fly.

The Lancers took their first lead of the game one inning later after the first blast of the season from Walters followed a two-out double from Kilby.

After Hartford tied the game in the top of the third and again in the fifth, Longwood took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning. After Krista Kelly led off the frame with a walk, Murphy doubled down the left field line to score her. Justina Augustine drew a five pitch walk one batter later. After advancing to third on a flyout to from Batten, Murphy took home on a delay took home, as Augustine stole second and scored behind Murphy on a throwing error from Hartford catcher Sawyer Fried.

McCarthy came on in the seventh with two on and no out, closing the door with three strikeouts to pick up her first save of the season.
