Timely Hitting Leads Longwood Past Wagner, 6-3.

Two Three-Run Frames Power Lancers To Second Straight Victory

FARMVILLE, VA.- Longwood junior infielders Brandon Harvell and Alex Lewis each had two-run hits in the Lancers' 6-3 win against Wagner with Harvell's sixth inning two-run double proving to be the game-winning hit Saturday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

Lewis and Harvell each finished with a hit that produced two runs for Longwood. Lewis cranked a two-run homer in the first inning of the game, his third extra-base hit of the series.

In the sixth inning Harvell was at the plate with runners on second and third following a walk, hit by pitch, and sacrifice bunt. He found a pitch to hit and gave Longwood the lead for good.

"Brandon Harvell did a great job taking advantage of some freebies in the sixth inning right after Mac McCafferty executed a bunt," head coach Ryan Mau said after the win. "Brandon stepped up and delivered a huge two-run double for us."

The Lancers scored once more in the sixth inning when Harvell scored on an error by Wagner shortstop Mick Mascelli.

In the first inning Longwood (2-3) got a pair of homers from Lewis and senior first baseman Connar Bastaich to start the scoring against Wagner (0-2).

"We did a good job offensively answering back after Wagner scored by putting a three spot on the board," Mau said. "Stealing the momentum away early was key. We had two really good swings put on the ball by Connar Bastaich and Alex Lewis to get us started offensively."

The homer for Lewis, his first of the season, was one of two runs the third baseman scored in the win. The other run came as the go-ahead run after Harvell ripped a double off the wall in left field in the sixth inning.

Lewis hit two doubles in the win Friday and the two-run home run upped his team-leading mark in total bases to 10 and took the team lead with his fifth RBI of the season.

"I'm feeling pretty comfortable at the plate right now and it's been huge for me to get off to a good start this season," Lewis said." It feels good being off to a hot start and I hope to keep it going the rest of the way."

Bastaich also added to the power output by the Lancers with his first career Longwood home run. The transfer from Potomac State didn't homer as a junior despite hitting .312, but got his second extra-base hit of the season in the win.

"It's exciting for Connar," Mau said. "He worked on retooling his swing for some more power in the offseason and he got a hold of one today. It's good to see him get rewarded."

Longwood got three innings of work from three different pitchers. Luke Simpson got the start and took no decision, Michael Catlin (1-0) pitched the middle three innings, and the final three were closed out by Devin Gould, who recorded his first save of the season.

Gould pitched in total three innings with no runs on three hits with five strikeouts to no walks. Three of the junior righty's five punchouts came against the first five batters he faced.

"I thought Devin was a little crisper today than he was last week at East Carolina," Mau said. "I thought he was overpowering tonight. When he's letting it rip he's tough to keep up with."

Gould pitched three innings, his longest outing since pitching three innings against UNC Asheville in 2015. The righty entered the game on a double-switch in which McCafferty, who started the game as the designated hitter, moved behind the plate after James Barry pinch hit for starting catcher Carlos Garrido. With it still being a save situation in the eighth inning when his spot came up Gould had to hit for himself.

"It's exciting getting to see your pitcher step into the box. It keeps the game fun, it keeps us relaxed and it kept him relaxed," Lewis said. "Of course, he was able to finish the job off at the end which is what really matters."

On the other side for Wagner Austin Goeke (0-1) took the loss. The right-hander allowed three runs in the first inning, but then held Longwood off the board for the next four innings before the Lancers delivered the knockout blow on Harvell's two-run go-ahead double.

Longwood scored a run with two outs in the sixth inning when Harvell scored on an error. It was the fourth two-out run scored by the Lancers in their second consecutive six-run effort. The Lancers have four two-out hits in the series and eight batters have reached with two outs.

"Coming up with two-out hits has been key for us this weekend and we have to continue to produce those," Mau said. "Those are tough on the defense when they're almost out of the inning and someone steps up and delivers a two-out RBI for us. We have to continue that in finding a way to extend innings. I'm proud of our offensive effort."

The Lancers wrap up their three-game series with Wagner Sunday at Buddy Bolding Stadium. Zach Potojecki (0-1) is set to face Wagner left-hander Matt Morris for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
