Texas Tech Handles Longwood, Wins 8th Straight

Lancers Dispatched 91-60 at Big 12 Foe in Final Non-Conference Game

LUBBOCK, Texas – Anthony Livingston poured in 19 points, and Zach Smith turned in a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead surging Texas Tech to their eighth straight win, a 91-60 victory over visiting Longwood Wednesday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.

The 6-8, 220-pound Livingston went off for his fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range to make Texas Tech (12-1) the Big 12's second 11-win team this season. He was one of four Red Raiders in double figures, leading Smith, Aaron Ross (14 points) and Keenan Evans (11).

"I'm glad that game is behind us. They are a very formidable opponent," said Longwood head coach Jayson Gee. "The game was off to a great start. There were a lot of physical and athletic players, and I'm anxious to see how [Texas Tech does] in conference. We got into some foul trouble early, and I thought that really dictated the game. Our inability to rebound the ball, I think, was the biggest detriment."

The NCAA's eighth-ranked rebounding team with a plus-11.3 margin, the Red Raiders continued their dominance on the boards outrebounding Longwood 42-18. Sixteen of those came on the offensive glass, leading to 17 second-chance points and the Red Raiders' 11th positive rebounding margin in 12 games.

The Red Raiders tipped the scales on the offensive end as well, shooting .554 (36-of-65) from the field en route to a pair of 40-point halves against a Longwood (3-8) team playing on fewer than 48 hours rest and with just eight scholarship players available.

"I have shaken hands with a number of coaches. All of them had said that if they lost three starters, they would be in trouble as well," said Gee, who has three major contributors out due to injury. "[Damarion Geter], who has a broken foot, might have a slight chance of coming back. Two of them, however, are ACL injuries, so they are out for the year. It has just been that kind of year for us, unfortunately.

"This was supposed to be the year where we lay the foundation, and you can't replace those guys with injuries. This team has been resilient this far. Now, we have 18 more games to show our true metal and go from there."

The loss brings to a close a grueling gauntlet of December road games for the Lancers, who have trekked more than 4,000 miles since the start of the month. That total includes more than 1,700 miles over the past four days from Farmville, Va., to Muncie, Ind., and then to Lubbock.

Longwood's four December road games, which also included matchups at No. 10 Creighton (12-0), George Mason (9-3) and this past Monday's meeting at Ball State (7-4), mark the end of the non-conference slate and precede a week-long break before the Lancers open Big South play on Dec. 29 against Campbell.

The non-conference finale against Texas Tech saw Longwood sophomore Chris Shields pour in a season-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field with three three-pointers. That double-figure performance was his second in the past three games, during which he has 10.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

"[Shields] gave us a great effort. We needed that from him, and that's the kind of play we expected out of him," said Longwood head coach Jayson Gee. "It's coming at a good time because if he continues to that, he'll be a factor for us as we move forward."

Shields was one of three double-figure scorers for the Lancers, who also got 12 points from Khris Lane and 11 points and five assists from Isaiah Walton. Senior Darrion Allen, who entered the night as the Big South's fifth-leading scorer, came up scoreless for the first time since his sophomore season when he was held without a basket in nine minutes against Charleston Southern on Feb. 14, 2015.

"He's just exhausted," Gee said of Allen. "He's had to carry a lot of the weight. He's really carried us a lot in a lot of areas, on and off the court, that people don't even realize. We needed to pick him up, really needed some guys to step up for DJ. It was a tough day for him. I don't see it happening again. This is a good time for him to have a break and get some rest and get his batteries recharged. At the end of the day, I don't think you'll see that again from him."

Wednesday's game is Longwood's last before the holiday and preempts a week-long break before the start of Big South play. Coming off a program-best eighth-place finish in last year's conference standings, the Lancers will begin their 18-game conference slate on Dec. 29 against Campbell in Willett Hall.
