Presbyterian Pulls Away From Longwood, 78-65

Blue Hose Wears Down Lancers, Makes Late Run in Second Half

CLINTON, S.C. – Led by a 22-point, 15-rebound double-double from Big South scoring leader DeSean Murray, Presbyterian wore down Longwood in the second half en route to a 78-65 win Wednesday evening at the Templeton Center.

The 6-5, 220-pound Murray led the second half charge with 17 points and 11 rebounds after the break to help the Blue Hose (7-8, 2-2 Big South) overcome a 34-29 halftime deficit. As part of his conference-leading 10th 20-point game of the season, the reigning Big South Player of the Week hit 8-of-16 shots from the field and scored nine second-chance points created by his seven offensive rebounds.

Murray did the bulk of his damage in the paint, while junior guard Markus Terry worked the perimeter to the tune of 22 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Terry came alive in the second half as well, hitting 4-of-5 treys after halftime on the way to 16 second-half points.

The game was within one possession midway through the second half with Longwood (4-13, 0-4 Big South) leading 45-44, but Terry sparked a game-changing 12-4 run when he hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend that lead to seven. Ed Drew followed with consecutive buckets for the Blue Hose, and Longwood trailed the rest of the way.

After the Lancers briefly reclaimed that one-point lead at the 12:52 mark, the Blue Hose would outscore Longwood 34-20 to the final whistle. The lead ballooned to as much as eight points before Longwood's post tandem of Lotanna Nwogbo and Khris Lane combined for seven points during a span of 1:34 that cut Presbyterian's advantage to 62-20, but Murray responded with four straight points to extend the lead to multiple possessions. Murray scored 10 points during that game-winning run, while Reggie Dillard added nine.

Murray's production in the paint neutralized a 16-point game from Lane, who hit 7-of-8 shots from the floor. It was the third double-digit scoring performance of the last four games from Lane, who is averaging 11.0 points and shooting .655 (19-of-29) from the floor during that span.

Joining Lane in double figures were Kanayo Obi-Rapu, who added 14 points in his second game back from a hamstring injury, and Nwogbo, finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The loss preempts Longwood's return home to Willett Hall this Saturday where the Lancers will face reigning Big South champion Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. That game will be the first of a hoops doubleheader, preceding the women's basketball team's 5 p.m. tipoff against Campbell. Prior to the doubleheader, the Longwood Office of Alumni & Career Services will host a Family Fun Day in the Longwood Fitness Center with inflatable bounce houses, food, music and crafts beginning at 11:30 a.m.
