Longwood Keeps Rolling, Routs Campbell 74-57

Lancers Dispatch Fighting Camels On The Road For Second Straight Win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Lotanna Nwogbo scored 19 points, Shaquille Johnson added 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Longwood won its second straight game in dominant fashion, dispatching Big South foe Campbell 74-57 on the road Thursday evening at Pope Convocation Center.

Coming off a 76-61 win over reigning Big South champion Coastal Carolina Saturday, Longwood (6-13, 2-4 Big South) led Campbell for all but the first 2:10 of the first half thanks to four double-figure scorers and a defensive effort that held the Fighting Camels to .328 (20-of-61) shooting from the field.

"I was very impressed with my team tonight. They were prepared, physically and mentally," head coach Jayson Gee said of his Lancers, who shot over 54.0 percent from the field and over 40.0 percent from three-point range for the second straight game.

"That Campbell offense we talked about, that we struggle preparing for, I thought we did a good job defending them and holding them down. I thought our big three were really good. We feel like those three are as good as any three in the league. When they play well, we can be dominant."

The aforementioned big three – Nwogbo, Johnson and point guard Tra'Vaughn White – all scored in double figures for the second straight game and combined for 49 of Longwood's 74 points. White scored 18 points, including 11 in the first half, and sank two driving layups in the final 38 seconds before halftime to give the Lancers a double-digit lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Campbell cut the lead to 11 at 50-39 with 11:31 to play, but Nwogbo and Kanayo Obi-Rapu combined to score eight unanswered points to silence the rally. Longwood's lead ballooned to as many as 25 points in the second half.

Campbell guard Chris Clemons, the fourth leading scorer in the Big South, led all scorers with 22 points but needed 19 shots to get there. D.J. Mason and Troy Harper added 13 points each, but the Fighting Camels could not solve a Longwood defense that has held five of the past six opponents under 30.0 percent shooting from three-point range.

Playing at the site of the 2016 Big South Men's Basketball Championship, the Lancers defeated the Fighting Camels (8-9, 2-5 Big South) on their home court for the second straight game and won their third straight game in the series. Longwood improved to 2-0 at the Pope Convocation Center under Gee.

"I said to our guys before we left Farmville that this was going to be a big trip because this place means something to us," Gee said. "This is where the conference tournament is, and we have never lost on this court. If we want to get to an NCAA Tournament, we're going to have to do it here."

Longwood overwhelmed Campbell down low, outscoring the Camels 52-24 in the paint thanks to a 44-27 rebounding margin and Nwogbo's 8-of-10 shooting performance. Nwogbo extended his double-digit scoring streak to nine games and has reached that 10-point plateau in 16 of his 19 games on the year.

Junior guard Darrion Allen stuffed the stat sheet as well, turning in a line of 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Khris Lane added eight points off the bench as part of a seven-player rotation that has combined for nine double-figure scoring games over the past two contests.

"Hats off to our guys for their effort, their attitude, their mindset," Gee said. "It wasn't Kanayo's day, but yet he still got eight rebounds. This team right now is just ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done."

The next test for the Lancers comes at Big South rival Liberty this Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Lynchburg, Va. The game will air live on ESPN3.com.
