Dan Campos notched a three-point night Wednesday at the Longwood Athletics Complex, leading the Longwood men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Bluefield College in its first exhibition of the season.
Campos – Longwood's leading scorer a season ago – tallied each of his three points in the first half of play, including a goal on his lone shot of the night off a free kick in the 27th minute.
The Lancers tallied two goals in the first and second half, as senior goalkeeper
Carl Carpenter picked up the victory. Carpenter and junior
Carlos Canas split time in net and combined for three saves in the outing.
The game marked the first time this season that the Lancers faced an opponent other than themselves. The result was a game where the Lancers controlled play throughout and outshot the Rams by an 18-6 margin.
"Games can never be simulated in practice," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "It was good to see our guys get out there working out problems and different situations. Overall, I thought there was good football being played and I thought it was a great first exercise for our guys. We're going to go against some stiff competition this year, but overall I felt this was a good building block for us."
Zach Crandall opened the scoring for Longwood in the 23rd minute of play, as he played a cross from Campos off his chest and was able to punch it past Bluefield goalkeeper Oscar Hernandez to give the Lancers the lead.
Campos gave Longwood a two-goal cushion just over four minutes later, as he sent a free kick from 25 yards out past Hernandez.
"It was good to get out and play against a team in an opposing jersey tonight," Campos said. "We had a chance to work on some things tonight that's hard to replicate in practice and I thought we had good tempo throughout."
Meanwhile, Carpenter made two saves in his 45 minutes of action, including a strong one-on-one save against Magnus Ahrens in the 38th minute of the game to preserve a two-goal lead for the blue-and-white.
Longwood stayed on the attack to begin the second half, taking a 3-0 lead less than three minutes after the break. Freshman
Willy Miezan was able to feed
Christian Keilty the ball in the attacking third of the field and he was able to beat Hernandez and increase the Longwood lead.
Canas came on for Carpenter in the second half and made one save on three Bluefield shot attempts.
Following a Finlay Wyatt goal in the 81st minute on a deflection from the top of the box, Bluefield's Eli Hairfield ended Longwood's shutout bid with a goal off a rebound in the 86th minute.
Wednesday's contest saw the debut of newcomers
Sherif Maalouf,
Esteban Sosa, Zack Morgan,
Rashad Boyd and Miezan in a Longwood uniform.
Longwood will play its final exhibition prior to the start of the 2015 season Monday, as the Lancers welcome Mary Washington to the Longwood Athletics Complex. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
"Monday will be another good test against a good Division-III opponent in Mary Washington," Atkinson said. "We'll go back to the training ground and work on our defensive shape. We were a little rusty at times in the final third and that's something we need to continue to address in the preseason."
