FARMVILLE, Va. – Former Longwood junior outfielder and current Boston Red Sox prospect
Kyri Washington was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Baseball Team, the organization announced Friday.
Â
Washington, a 6-1, 215-pound native of Prospect, Va., was named to the VaSID second team and joined a six-player outfield contingent that included first-teamers Logan Farrar of VCU, Saige Jenco of Virginia Tech and Michael Morman of Richmond, and second-team picks Denathan Dukes of Norfolk State and Luke Willis of George Mason.
Â
Washington belted a Big South-leading 15 home runs in 2015, a junior campaign in which he hit .279 with 52 RBI, 40 runs scored, 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts, a .548 slugging percentage and a .357 on base clip. He set career highs in nearly every offensive category and broke Longwood's Division I single-season home run record while helping the Lancers to 22 overall wins and nine Big South victories in head coach
Ryan Mau's first season.
Â
Washington's breakthrough junior season drew the attention of the Boston Red Sox, who selected him with their 23rd round pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Washington signed his professional contract on June 24 and is currently playing with the Red Sox rookie affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He paired with Milwaukee Brewers undrafted free agent signee
Aaron Myers to give Longwood two MLB signees in the same season for the first time in the school's Division I era.
Â
With Washington's selection, Longwood has now placed a player on the VaSID All-State Baseball Team in every year of the Division I era, which began in 2007-08.
