Senior Class Leads Lancers to DH Sweep of CSU

Longwood Has Earned Series Victories in Each of its Seven Big South Series This Season

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood's senior class comprised of Megan Baltzell, Casey Lifsey, Libby Morris, Chelsea Sciacca and Katie Shinrock was honored Saturday in their final games at Lancer Field and aided a complete team effort and pair of victories.

The Lancers earned a 9-3 win in the opening game of the day, before concluding the weekend with their second run-rule victory in two days with a 13-0 shutout in five innings. With the pair of victories, Longwood completed the three-game sweep of Charleston Southern, as the squad has now taken a series from each of the seven schools it has faced in Big South play.

"It was really the best weekend we've had all year," said head coach Kathy Riley. "We got timely hitting, very good defense and strong pitching. It was really just an all-around good performance. I was really happy to see all of our seniors have a big impact for us today on senior day."

Sciacca led the way at the plate with four hits on the afternoon, including a solo home run in her second-to-last at bat at Lancer Field. Meanwhile Baltzell added a pair of doubles and now sits just three hits shy of tying the all-time program record, held by former teammate Brooke Shorte at 248.

Meanwhile, Emily Murphy kept her hot bat going, adding a pair of home runs and finishing the day with six RBI. Murphy has now homered in each of her last four games since moving to bat cleanup and six of her past eight games.

The duo of Elizabeth McCarthy and Libby Morris was dominant throughout the weekend in the circle, giving up just three runs in 17 innings of work. The pair allowed just nine Charleston Southern hits throughout the weekend and struck out a combined 14 strikeouts, including 13 from McCarthy.

With 175 strikeouts this season, McCarthy sits third in program history and is just 18 punch outs shy of matching Briana Wells for Longwood's single season record in school history.

With the three wins, Longwood solidifies at worst a .500 record for the regular season, as the squad is 26-23 on the year. More importantly, the Lancers are 17-4 in conference play and one win or Coastal Carolina loss in the Big South shy of clinching the first regular season conference championship in program history.

"Even though it was wet and rainy, we couldn't have asked for a better day in terms of getting three wins while being with all of our friends and family," Baltzell said. "It was truly a special day."

Longwood will look for a eighth series victory in its final regular season series of the season at Radford May 2 and 3. The two teams will play in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, before playing the final game of the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m.

Longwood 9, Charleston Southern 3
Longwood scored five times in the fifth inning, as the Lancers earned a 9-3 come from behind victory in game one of the afternoon.

Morris (6-7) earned the win after going 5.1 innings and giving up just three runs on six hits and a pair of walks. McCarthy earned the save, with 1.2 innings of work and giving up just one hit to go along with three strikeouts.

"I thought Libby [Morris] threw the ball well for us and I really think we'll see her at her best in a couple of weeks at the conference tournament," Riley said.

Jennifer Giles (13-15) took the loss for Charleston Southern after giving up all nine runs on nine hits and six walks.

Eight different Lancers recorded a hit in the game, including a 2-for-4 performance from Chelsea Sciacca to go along with a run scored.

After Longwood took an early 2-0 lead in the first two innings off a leadoff home run for Justina Augustine in the first inning and a Katie Shinrock recorded an RBI single to third base that scored Sciacca in the second inning.

Stevi Johnson homered in the third inning to right center field to give Charleston Southern its first lead and its only runs of the weekend.

Jamie Barbour led off the key fifth inning with a single to short to notch her fifth straight game with a base hit. After a walk was issued to Baltzell and Murphy, Kelsey Sweeney came up as a pinch hitter for Glenn Walters. Sweeney came up with a big two RBI single to regain the 4-3 advantage. However, Longwood wasn't done in the inning, as Taylor Hedrick came on as a pinch hitter and lifted a three-run blast over the wall in right center to increase the Lancer advantage to 7-3.

Murphy continued her tremendous week with a homer for the third straight game in the eighth inning following a Baltzell double to left center.

Longwood 13, Charleston Southern 0 (5)
The Lancers picked up where they left off in game one to start game two, scoring six runs in the first inning en route to a 13-0 victory to complete the sweep.

Following a ceremony to honor the program's five seniors between games, the four seniors in the batting lineup – Baltzell, Lifsey, Sciacca and Shinrock – each recorded a hit as Longwood batted around in the opening inning to put up six runs on six hits.

"I've gained many lifelong friends throughout my four years, including all of my current and former teammates along with the class that I came in with," Baltzell said. "I can't thank the coaching staff enough for everything they've helped us with. I'll cherish my four years here for the rest of my life."

McCarthy was stellar in the circle, allowing just one hit and a pair of walks in a complete game shutout. She finished with nine strikeouts, just one shy of matching her career-high for the fourth time this season.

"I thought Biz was good today as well," Riley said. "I thought she was better today than she was yesterday and part of that has to do with the fact that she started and was able to get into a rhythm."

Hayley Elkins (2-3) took the loss, giving up 13 runs on 11 hits and four walks.

Sciacca recorded her second two-hit game of the day with a home run and a single, while Haleigh Kilby came on to replace Shinrock and recorded a pair of hits in her two plate appearances on the afternoon.

The Lancers scored six runs in the first on six hits, including four from the senior class. Augustine led off the frame with a double that bounced to the wall, before scoring one batter later as Barbour reached on a muffed throw from Charleston Southern first baseman Brooke Lein. She scored after a Baltzell double, before Sciacca crushed a 3-2 offering to left center to put the Lancers ahead, 4-0. Longwood would tack on two more runs, including an RBI single from Lifsey to score Shinrock.

After working around a one-out walk in the top half of the second inning, the Lancers continued the onslaught in the home half of the frame by adding three more runs to increase its lead to 9-0. Three walks to Augustine, Baltzell and Murphy, as well as a base hit from Barbour, brought home Augustine. Barbour would later score on a wild pitch from Elkins. Baltzell scored the final run of the inning following an RBI groundout to third base from Sciacca.

The Lancers added four additional runs in the third inning, as Murphy hit her second three-run homer of the weekend.
