PHILADELPHIA – Kelly Phelan and Nora McCallion combined for five goals and six assists to lead St. Joe's to a 15-7 win over Longwood Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Â
Phelan and McCallion spearheaded a St. Joe's (3-1) attack that fired 22 shots on goal and scored eight goals after halftime. Phelan scored four goals and added an assist while McCallion dished out four helpers and scored twice.
Â
"Today wasn't our best team effort overall," Longwood head coach
Elaine Jones said. "We had some nice moments of individual effort, but we just weren't able to play a full 60 minutes as a group. We will continue to work on our consistency for our upcoming games. When we get everyone on the field working as a collective unit for the whole game, we can accomplish great things."
Â
Among those moments of individual effort was a three-goal performance from junior
Sarah Butler, who has now scored in all five games and leads Longwood (1-4) with 10 goals. The Melbourne, Australia, native added two ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover Saturday.
Â
Butler's three goals, along with goals from
Riley Dolan, Sarah Jacobson,
Sarah Arndt and
Katie McHugh, were not enough to overcome St. Joe's' balanced attack. Along with Phelan, six different Hawks scored multiple goals as St. Joe's strung together three separate runs of at least three consecutive goals.
Â
That first scoring burst came with under 15 minutes left in the first half and Longwood leading 3-2. Butler and Jacobson had just scored back-to-back in a span of three minutes to give Longwood a one-goal lead, but Kristen Kelbon turned the tide with the first of four straight St. Joe's goals at 14:46. McCallion took over after that, dishing three straight assists to Phelan, Katelyn Ambrose and Julia Falcone to put St. Joe's ahead for the remainder of the game.
Â
Butler broke up the St. Joe's run with her second goal of the day with 5:22 remaining in the half, but the Hawks would hold her scoreless until 47th minute. Arndt and McHugh would also score for Longwood in the second half, but St. Joe's bookended each of those goals with scores of their own.
Â
Longwood will now return to the Athletics Complex Wednesday for a home showdown against William & Mary at 4 p.m. That will be the first of seven straight home games for the Lancers.
