William & Mary Pulls Away From Longwood

Lancers Fall, 20-9, After Tribe Surges in Second Half

FARMVILLE, Va. – Shannon Quinn and Amanda Johnson engineered a second-half surge that led William & Mary to a 20-9 win over Longwood Wednesday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

8983Quinn scored three of her four goals after halftime, while Johnson scored twice during the Tribe's 11-3 run in the second half. Those two combined for seven goals on the day as William & Mary (1-4) pulled away from a game that was tied with less than six minutes remaining in the first half.

"Just like the last game, we played a strong first half, but once again, we allowed the game to get away from us in the second half, and against a solid team," Longwood head coach Elaine Jones said. "We dug ourselves a hole we just couldn't get out of. Moving forward, we still need to work on everyone putting two halves of stellar play together to give ourselves the best opportunity to win. That will be the goal for the next game."

Longwood (1-5) fell into a 4-1 deficit in the first half but stormed back with a 5-2 run that tied the score at 6-6. Junior midfielder Katie McHugh, who netted a season-high five goals on the day, scored three straight in a span of 11 minutes during that rally.

8984But when William & Mary responded by closing out the first half with three consecutive goals in the final 5:30 to go ahead 9-6, the deficit proved too deep for Longwood to overcome. The Tribe carried that momentum into the second half, scoring 18 seconds after the first draw to extend a run that would balloon to six unanswered goals. Longwood senior Liz Trainer broke up that streak with her first goal of the season, but Danielle Palmucci and Emma MacLeod answered with two more goals that extended William & Mary's lead to 14-7.

Sarah Arndt and McHugh would net two more goals the rest of the way, but back-to-back goals from Michelle Goss highlighted William & Mary's final surge.

Longwood has little time to dwell on the loss, however, as Mercer comes to the Athletics Complex Friday for a 3 p.m. matchup.
