HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Longwood softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament in Hawai'i. The Lancers dropped the first game of the day to Utah, 10-1, in six innings, before dropping a heartbreaker against Hawai'i, 8-7, in eight innings in the second game.
Freshman
Haleigh Kilby led the Lancers with a 4-of-7 performance at the dish, including a 3-for-3 game against Utah.
Emily Murphy was also strong, going 3-for-4 in the game against Hawai'i with a home run.
"I personally hurt the team today by not making adjustments in the pitch calling and time outs at a couple of critical stages," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley.
The Lancers have now lost 10 straight games since opening the campaign 2-1 and sit with a 2-11 overall record.
Up next, Longwood will look to rebound Friday with a 6 p.m. ET. rematch against Utah.
"We'll stick together tomorrow and battle our tails off because we know that's what we believe in," Riley said.
Utah 10, Longwood 1 (6) Kristen Stewart went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI to lead Utah past Longwood, 10-1, in six innings in the first game of the day.
The game marked the second time this season that Longwood fell courtesy of the run rule, as the Lancers run their record to 1-2 in run rule games.
Haleigh Kilby led the Lancers at the dish, going 3-for-3 with three singles and a run scored.
Longwood starter
Jenna Carnes pitched two-plus innings, giving up three runs off five hits while striking out one.
Libby Morris came on in relief of Carnes and went 4.0 innings, allowing six runs off nine hits and two walks.
Despite not allowing a run and a single hit after 2.0 innings pitched, Utah starting pitcher Katie Donovan was pulled from the game. Kayce Nieto came on to replace Donovan and gave up no runs off four hits and a walk to earn the victory.
Utah wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early, 2-0 lead. The second batter of the game Kate Dickman reached base after she grounded back to the mound, but an error on Longwood starter
Jenna Carnes allowed Dickman to advance to second. She came around to score one batter later after Bridget Castro ripped a 0-1 pitch to center field.
The Utes added a second run in the inning off Kristen Stewart's home run to center field.
Utah added to its lead an inning later, as Heather Bowen crushed the second homer of the game for the Utes.
The Utes continued to add to their lead in the third inning with three runs off four hits. Utah loaded the bases with no outs in the inning, as Dickman, Castro and Stewart each reached base. Castro scored off a single to left field from Marissa Mendenhall, before a sacrifice fly from Bowen scored Stewart. … Pacheco added the third Utah hit of the inning to bring home Anissa Urtez.
Utah added a run in the fifth inning, after Samantha Glantz worked a leadoff walk. She advanced to third base following a double down the right field line from Bella Secaira, before scoring on a wild pitch from Morris.
The Utes weren't through, adding three runs off four hits in the sixth inning. Flippen and Dickman led off the inning with consecutive singles, before Flippen scored two batters later on Stewart's third hit of the night. Dickman scored one batter later, before Stewart was brought home on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Haleigh Kilby recorded her third hit of the night to lead off the seventh, before scoring Longwood's only run of the game off a fielder's choice off the bat of
Krista Kelly.
Hawai'I 8, Longwood 7 (8) Longwood burst out to a 7-0 lead, but Hawai'i scored eight unanswered runs – including a six-run fifth inning – to record a come-from-behind victory over the visiting Lancers Thursday in the second game of the day for Longwood.
The Lancers were led at the plate in game two by
Emily Murphy, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run.
Elizabeth McCarthy (1-4) took the loss for the Lancers, tossing 7.1 innings and giving up eight runs off six hits and five walks. She also notched five strikeouts.
Brittany Hitchcock (5-3) pitched 4.1 innings in relief to pick up the victory for the Rainbow Wahine. She gave up two unearned runs off three hits and notched four strikeouts.
Things started positive for the Lancers, as the squad scored three runs in the first three innings and added to its lead with a four-run fourth inning to take a commanding, 7-0, lead.
Emily Murphy led off the game with her first homer of the season to give Longwood the early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Walters started the inning by drawing a leadoff walk on four pitches. Sciacca singled to right field to move Walters to third base, but Walters was able to score following a throwing error from Hawai'i's … from right field and that allowed to move to third base.
An inning later, Longwood scored three runs. KIlby – who finished 1-for-4 in the game – led off the inning with a single, before Sciacca brought her home with a one-out double. Adams followed with a triple to bring around Sciacca and give the Lancers a commanding, 4-0, lead. Walters was able to bring home Adams following a groundout to first base and the Lancers had a 5-0 lead.
Longwood added two more runs in the fifth inning, as Sweeney reached on a fielding error from Hawai'I third baseman Rachel Lack. The error brought home
Justina Augustine and
Megan Baltzell, as the Lancers looked primed to put an end to an eight-game losing streak with a 7-0 lead.
However, a six-run bottom of the fifth for Hawai'I changed the course of the game. Heather Morales provided capped off the inning with a grand-slam to bring the Rainbow Wahine within one run and change the momentum of the game. The first three batters to come to the plate reached base to load the base paths with no outs.
The Rainbow Wahine tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Morales brought home Burton on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Playing in its fourth game decided by an international tiebreak, Sweeney was able to move Kilby from second to third with one out. However, Sciacca struck out swinging and Adams grounded out to first base to end the threat and strand Kilby.
Kristina Aikiona brought in Kiani Wong to cap off the big come-from-behind win for the Rainbow Wahine with one out in the eighth inning.
