HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Sammi Noland singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning to score the go-ahead run for Oregon State.
Â
That run was the start of a big inning for the Beavers, who went on to score four runs in the final inning to defeat Longwood, 7-3, Wednesday afternoon on the first day of the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament played at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Â
The trio of Noland, Dani Gilmore, and CJ Chirichingo paced the Beaver lineup, as the heart of the Oregon State order combined to go 8-for-11 with four RBI and five runs scored.
Â
"To say that I'm disappointed would be an understatement," said head coach
Kathy Riley. "We had several opportunities for different players to step up but without positive results."
Â
The loss for Longwood is its eighth straight which marks the longest losing streak for the Lancers in the Division I era. Longwood falls to 2-9 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 17-5 on the season.
Â
Taylor Cotton (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up her first victory of the season. She came on in relief of Rainey Dyreson, who tossed five-plus innings and gave up three runs off seven hits and three walks. She also recorded four strikeouts.
Â
Libby Morris (1-4) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up seven earned runs off 12 hits and three walks.
Â
Oregon State was able to get the lead in the top of the first inning, stringing together three consecutive hits from Gilmore, Noland and Chirichingo. Gilmore hit her first of two doubles of the day to left center with two out, before Noland advanced Gilmore to third with a base hit through the left side. Chirichingo then brought Gilmore home to give the Beavers the early 1-0 lead.
Â
Longwood responded in the second inning with three runs off four hits and an error. With the bases full of Lancers,
Justina Augustine hit the 0-1 pitch to right field to bring home
Rebecca Huitt, who came on as a pinch runner after
Chelsea Sciacca.
Â
Lifsey followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to bring around
Jamie Barbour and freshman
Kelsey Sweeney to give the Lancers a 3-1 advantage.
Â
The Lancers surrendered just one run in the fourth inning after Oregon State loaded the bases with one out. Mikela Manewa grounded out into a force play at second, but brought home Kori Nishitomi to make it a one run game.
Â
However, the Beavers tied the score an inning later with the heart of the order batting. Gilmore led off the inning with her second double of the afternoon, before advancing to third on a fly out by Noland. She would score one batter later following a Chirichingo single to left field.
Â
Longwood had an opportunity to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning after having runners on second and third with one out. However, foul outs from
Emily Murphy and
Carly Adams ended the threat.
Â
Oregon State took its second lead of the night in the seventh inning off four runs, five hits and three errors. The first four Beaver to bat in the inning would reach base, as Noland drove in the winning run in Gilmore off a single to center field. Chirichingo followed with a single to score Gilmore. Noland also scored on the play following an error on right fielder
Taylor Hedrick.Â
Â
"Tomorrow will be just as challenging and I look forward to the possibility of playing winning softball," Riley said.
Â
Longwood will look to bounce back Thursday, as the Lancers play Utah at 8:30 p.m. ET and host Hawai'i at 11 p.m. ET.
