GREENVILLE, N.C. – A nine-run third inning propelled South Carolina to a 10-0 victory in five innings over the Longwood softball team Sunday afternoon to conclude play at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina.
"We played a talented South Carolina team that put pressure on us in every inning," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "We helped them with walks and errors which allowed them to put a lot more runs on the board than necessary."
Sophomore Nickie Blue (2-0) picked up the shutout win for South Carolina, allowing two hits in the fourth while fanning five overall.
Victoria Williams led the Gamecock offense with a three-run homerun in the nine-run third that saw the first eight South Carolina batters reach base. Lauren Masters and Ansley Ard also recorded two RBI each in the victory.
Sophomore
Jenna Carnes (0-1) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up three runs, two earned on a hit and two walks in two-plus innings of work.
Megan Baltzell recorded one of two Longwood hits, as she finished the weekend 6-of-11 at the plate with two home runs and six runs scored. For her efforts, Baltzell was named to the Pirate Classic All-Tournament Team.
Casey Lifsey also had a strong weekend going 5-for-9 at the plate with a double, home run and three RBI.
Longwood pitcher Elizabeth McCarthy was also named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts. McCarthy pitched 11.1 innings throughout the day Saturday and gave up one unearned run. McCarthy posted seven strikeouts in the contest against Oakland, before coming on in relief to record five strikeouts against East Carolina.The Lancers earned two victories throughout the three-day tournament, opening the season with a 9-0 victory over Delaware St. Friday and picking up a 5-0 win against Oakland Saturday.
"We will refocus our efforts this week to get more prepared because the first third of our schedule is very challenging," Riley said.
Longwood will have 19 days off before facing California on Feb. 27 in one of two tournaments the squad will play in Hawai'i.
