CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's Jamie Weisner scored a game-high 24 points, as the No. 9/10 Beavers secured a 110-45 victory over visiting Longwood Friday night inside Gill Coliseum.
The 24 points from Weisner, the Pac-12 Preseason Player of the Year, was just three shy of her career-high 27 points, tallied last season against Southern Cal. Weisner sliced her way through the Longwood defense on the way to a 9-of-11 shooting performance to go along with five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shots.
Weisner was one of six Beavers to score in double figures. Preseason All-Pac-12 performer Sydney Weise was one assist shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine assists, while Devin Hunter finished with 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
The 110 points for Oregon State marks the most points given up by a Longwood squad in the D-I era, as well as the most points allowed by a Longwood team since Hampton scored 123 points in the 1987-88 season.Â
The Beavers (1-0) – who raised their 2014-15 Pac-12 Regular Season Championship banner prior to the start of the game – overmatched the undersized Lancers throughout the game, shooting 64 percent (41-of-64) from the floor. Oregon State's defense was just as stifled the Longwood offense, holding Second-Team Preseason All-Big South selection
Raven Williams to just two points on 1-of-5 shooting. The performance from Williams marked her lowest point output since being held scoreless at Florida last season. Â
For the Lancers (0-1), 11 players found the scoring column, including a team-high nine points from senior
Deborah Headen. The game marked the return to the court for redshirt-junior
Daeisha Brown, who missed the final 27 games of the 2014-15 campaign after suffering a torn ACL injury. She was limited to 13 minutes and tallied two points and a team-high two assists in her first game in 358 days.
The game also featured the debut for Longwood's five newcomers – junior college transfer
Eboni Gilliam, as well as Ashlee and
Kemari Jones,
Ciarah Bennett and
Kate Spradlin. Gilliam and
Kemari Jones led the newcomers with six points, while
Ashlee Jones was 2-of-3 from the floor and finished with five points.
Oregon State marks the eighth ranked opponent that Longwood has faced in the Division I era, including the fourth top-10 team the Lancers have played in that time frame after facing then-No. 9 Miami during the 2011-12 season.
The Lancers will have a short turnaround, as the squad travels to James Madison Sunday, Nov. 15. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
