Early Run Guides James Madison Past Longwood

Jazmon Gwathmey Scores Career-High 22 Points in Win

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison came out and made its first seven shots of the game to race to a 16-0 lead and never looked back, earning an 88-30 victory Sunday afternoon over Longwood at the JMU Convocation Center.

The run to open the game for the Dukes was sparked Jazmon Gwathmey – the 2015 CAA Preseason Player of the Year – who scored 11 of her 13 first half points in the opening quarter, including 11 of the first 19 points for the Dukes.

Gwathmey matched her career-high of 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting, including a 3-of-7 performance from beyond the arc. She filled the stat sheet with seven boards to go along with four assists, four blocks and three steals.

Meanwhile Savannah Felgemacher finished with a double-double, as she scored 17 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. Ashley Perez and Angela Mickens also finished in double figures for the Dukes, with 13 points each.

"This wasn't the way we envisioned starting the season," said head coach Bill Reinson. "We knew the first few games were very challenging, but this was extremely disappointing."

JMU (1-0), who received votes in the USA Today Top-25 Preseason Poll, opened a 24-2 lead seven minutes into the contest. The Lancers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to get within 14 points, but was never able to close the gap further.

Following their hot start shooting, the Dukes shot 53 percent from the floor in the opening half, including 5-of 10 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, James Madison frustrated the Lancer offense, who shot the ball 18 percent for the contest.

The Dukes also limited the Lancers (0-2) to just three 3-point field goals, marking the fewest treys for the Lancers since the squad hit just two three-pointers Florida last season. In addition, the 30 points for the Lancers marks its lowest scoring output since scoring just 26 points at then-No. 3 Notre Dame during the 2011-12 campaign.

Kyndal Skersick led Longwood with six points, as eight players found the scoring column. Eboni Gilliam led the Lancers on the boards, grabbing eight boards to go along with her four points, while Second-Team All-Big South Selection Raven Williams was held to five points on 2-of-8 shooting.

After playing two 2015 NCAA Tournament teams in a span of three days, Longwood will have a week to prepare for Virginia, as the Lancers and Cavaliers are set to play Sunday, Nov. 15. Tip time is set for 2 p.m., at John Paul Jones Arena.

"Fortunately, we have a lot of character in this locker room," Reinson said. "The challenge here is to see how they respond."
