FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood senior forward
Jennifer Burris scored her first career hat trick to guide the Lancers to a 4-1 win over Appalachian State in the team's home finale Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex.
Burris now holds sole possession of ninth place on Longwood's all-time career goals list with 29, and moves into a tie for the Mid-American Conference lead with nine this season. Burris' performance led a Lancer squad that finished with a 16-6 shots-on-goal advantage and three second half goals.
"A performance like that has been in us for a while," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "We really hadn't managed to put it all together until now. At halftime we were still a bit in the balance, but we came out in the second half and did what we needed to do."
The Lancers (5-8, 2-2 MAC) led 1-0 at halftime, after the first of three goals for Burris when
Edel Nyland connected with her near the left post for the assist, but faced stout defending in the first half from the Mountaineers. Goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi saved nine of Longwood's 13 first half shots, including a diving save near the right post off a shot by
Lil-Sophie Achterwinter in the 21
st minute.
Longwood led 2-0 after
Becky Danaher found Achterwinter, who received Danaher's pass off of a penalty corner and found the net three minutes into the second half. Five minutes later, on another penalty corner assist from Danaher, Burris recorded her second goal after hitting a low shot while spinning toward the back side. Burris' third goal came in the 49
th minute on a long pass by forward
Leonie Verstraete that made its way to her inside the opponent's arc from the opposite side of the field.
"It was a great team win," said Burris. "We've been through a lot together over these last four years. So sharing this moment with them is definitely special and I'm excited to celebrate with them."
The Mountaineers fought their way to get back into the game, as Taylor Cimbalist put a shot into the low right side of the goal on the setup by Caroline Philips that came from behind her in the 66
th minute. But by then it was too late to overcome four Lancer goals and four saves by goalkeeper
Katie Wyman, who made her second career start.
Seniors
Hollie MacDonald,
Meghan O'Connor and Burris leave the Athletics Complex on a high note with their 17
th career home victory. O'Connor finished the game with two shots on goal, while MacDonald tallied another hard-fought 59 minutes on the blue turf.
"A win on senior day is a great way to end the homestand for the seniors," Byers said. "It's fully deserved. They've given us four years with a huge amount of commitment. Jen scored the three goals, but they all put in the hard work."
Longwood takes the momentum on the road into Athens, Ohio, for the first of two remaining MAC matchups against Ohio Sunday, Oct. 18, at noon.
"I'm very excited for the Ohio game," Byers said. "I think it's going to be really close. It's a big MAC game and carrying a bit of momentum into it will be good."
