Lancers Fall at Hands of First-Place Ohio

MAC Foe Ohio Steps Over Longwood 5-1 En Route to First-Place Standing

FARMVILLE, Va. - Ohio sophomore Maria Russell put in two goals for the Bobcats en route to a big 5-1 Mid-American Conference win over Longwood Sunday at Pruitt Field.

Russell, who now has a MAC-leading 12 goals, helps her team improve to a 4-1 record in MAC play and sole possession of first place in the MAC. After Longwood midfielder Brenna Kinzel evened the score at 1-1, the Bobcats scored four unanswered goals, including three in the second half, to take the victory.

"Ohio did a great job of making the most of their opportunities," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "Although the box score doesn't show it, I thought that we played well. We feel like what we did here was good enough for us to stay with them."

In the 22nd minute, Kinzel scored from the left side of the arc off a penalty corner assist from Becky Danaher and Jennifer Burris to answer a 1-0 deficit stemming from a breakaway goal by Ohio's Rachel Kho that came 55 seconds into the game.

Ohio ended the half with a penalty goal from Elena Curley, and another from Russell to lead 3-1. The Lancers matched the Bobcats' aggression, tallying five first-half shots compared to six from Ohio.

The Bobcats outlasted Longwood as Russell's 55th-minute and Adele Sammon's 63rd-minute goals put the finishing touches on the game's scoring. Ohio finished with a 13-6 advantage in total shots fired.

Longwood keeper Katie Wyman kept Longwood afloat with three saves, despite facing eight penalty corners and eight shots on goal from Ohio.

Ohio keeper Lina Trucco had four saves on five Longwood shots on goal. The Lancers finished with a .833 shots-on-goal percentage with five of their shots on goal.

Longwood now falls to a 5-9 record, 2-3 in MAC play. The team sits at fifth place in the MAC with one conference game remaining.

The Lancers will continue their four-game road trip with a game against VCU in Richmond, Va., Friday, Oct. 23. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
