LYNCHBURG, Va. – Longwood pulled within 2-1 before Liberty scored the last six goals of the game to run away from the Lancers Tuesday at Liberty Field Hockey Field.
The 8-1 defeat marks the worst result on the season for Longwood. The Lancers fell behind early by a score of 2-0 as Liberty scored twice within 90 seconds. Despite the scoreline, Longwood opened the game with one of its better starts this season, controlling the first 10 minutes of play. Even following the two goals, the Lancers showed mettle in pulling one back before the half.
Jennifer Burris scored a beautiful goal with 8:34 remaining in the half. Burris took a pass from
Lil-Sophie Achterwinter and went reverse to finish to the top right corner of the cage. That made the score 2-1 and the Lancers looked ready for a dogfight.
Liberty answered with another pair of goals in quick succession, essentially putting the game out of reach before the half. Â The Flames would tack on another four goals in the second half as Longwood had no answer for Liberty's quick attack. Â
Longwood keeper
Lauren Bernard recorded a career-high 11 saves in the loss after facing 20 shots on cage. The 11 saves bested her previous high of eight in games against VCU and Ohio earlier this season.
Longwood returns to the turf Sunday, Oct. 5 at Central Michigan for a Mid-American Conference showdown with the Chippewas.Â
