Mt. Pleasant, Mich. – Longwood squandered a 3-1 second half lead and fell in overtime to Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at the CMU Athletics Complex. The 4-3 defeat drops Longwood to 4-8 on the season and just 1-4 in overtime games.
Longwood (4-8, 1-3) came out hot in the first half, scoring a pair of early goals to race out to a 2-0 lead.
Jennifer Burris scored her team leading sixth goal in the 11th minute to open the scoring. Burris finished a corner opportunity in front of goal with
Edel Nyland and
Jessica Diaz earning assists on the play.
The Lancers tacked on their second goal ten minutes later when
Ellen Ross drove into the circle and fired a shot past CMU keeper Sadie Reynolds for her first goal of the year.
Longwood appeared set to cruise into the half with a two goal advantage, but Central Michigan turned the tide just 39 seconds before the break. The Chippewas got a goal off of their second corner as Jordyn Brengosz cut the deficit in half.
The Lancers broke the ice in the second half as well when
Hollie MacDonald converted a penalty stroke in the 60th minute. The stroke was MacDonald's second penalty conversion of the season and her fourth goal overall. The tally gave Longwood a 3-1 lead with just 10 minutes to play.
Longwood could not withstand the late Chippewa surge as Cayleigh Immelman scored twice in 44 seconds to bring Central Michigan level. The late collapse sent Longwood into overtime for the fifth time this season.
In the overtime period, Longwood unleashed a barrage on the Central Michigan goal. The Lancers racked up six shots, four of which were on frame, but could not find the game winner. The game seemed all but destined for a second overtime period until Immelman struck for the third time with only 28 seconds left in the period. The goal sent Central Michigan to a stunning victory.
Longwood returns to action Friday, Oct. 10 as the Lancers host top-ranked North Carolina at 5 p.m. in Farmville.
