Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amanda Spencer's hot streak continued Tuesday evening as the sophomore midfielder scored her third goal in the past two games to lead Longwood past Howard, 1-0, at Green Stadium.
Spencer's game-winning goal did not come until the 73rd minute, but with goalkeeper
Hailey Machen and the Lancer defense recording their second shutout of the season, it was enough to propel Longwood (4-2-1) to its third road win of the year. Longwood is now 3-0 in road games in 2014 and has won eight consecutive away contests with six shutouts dating back to 2013.
"This has become one of the toughest venues for us to play at these days," Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer said. "Howard is always organized and very tough to break down, and they force us to defend as well. We had some chances but had to stay patient until finally breaking through for the goal. We withstood some pressure, and the shutout was hard-earned."
Spencer, who last Saturday tied the game and added a second-half insurance goal in a 3-1 win at Saint Francis, finally broke through for the Lancers at the 72:55 mark on a pass from
Haylea Witz. She broke free from her spot at midfield and laced in the game-winner from 20 yards out, delivering her fourth goal of the year.
The goal was the culmination of an aggressive effort by the Lancers, who hammered nine of their 11 shots on goal. Howard goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson put up a heroic effort stopping eight of those, but the one Spencer snuck past her was enough to undo the Bison.
Katie Beebe,
Alana Mackey,
Kelsey McDonald and
Jayden Metzger were all ironmen in the field for Longwood, playing all 90 minutes in the shutout effort. They helped Machen face just two shots on goal, both of which she saved.
"Now it's time to rest, recover and prepare for a very talented VCU squad on Sunday," Dyer said.
Longwood, winner of three of their past four, will take on the Rams on Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
