RICHMOND, Va. – Longwood goalkeepers
Lauren Bernard and
Allison Savage combined to shutout the Richmond Spiders over the final two periods of a three period scrimmage as the Lancers fell 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond scored three goals in the opening period en route the preseason victory over the Lancers. The two squads agreed to play three periods using regulation rules, one 25-minute period followed by two 20-minute periods. The Lancers fell behind early and were unable to rally against the Spiders stout defense.
"It was a good test for us against a strong team," head coach
Iain Byers said. "This is exactly why we play games like this in preseason."
Redshirt freshman
Allison Savage made her first start in goal for the Lancers, conceding the three Spider goals over the opening 25 minutes. Sophomore keeper
Lauren Bernard came on in the second period and shut down the Richmond attack. Savage returned in front of the cage for the third period and bounced back from the shaky start to provide 20 scoreless minutes to end regulation.
Following the three periods of regulation play, Longwood and Richmond played a 10 minute overtime period of seven-on-seven. The Spiders scored the only goal of overtime, striking with 6:50 on the clock. Each team then took 10 penalty corners to work on situational play. Longwood was unable to convert on its penalty corners, but managed to hold Richmond off the board as well.
Finally, the two teams competed in a shootout, with Richmond claiming a 3-2 victory on the penalty shots. Freshman
Edel Nyland and junior
Jennifer Burris converted their chances for the Lancers.
Saturday's scrimmage marked the conclusion of Longwood's preseason. The Lancers now have a week to prepare for their season opener against Holy Cross on Saturday, Aug, 30 in Lowell, Mass.
