FARMVILLE, Va. -- Wins by the twosome of Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters in doubles, as well as victories by Hubler and Marketa Placha in singles, carried Charleston Southern University (13-3, 7-0 Big South) to a 7-0 Big South Conference women's tennis victory at Longwood University on Sunday in Farmville. The Lancers (3-9, 1-7 Big South) will play their season finale, which will also be Senior Day, against Big South opponent Liberty University on Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m.
"Today we did not necessarily play well throughout, but we did play hard," said first-year head coach
Casey Wharton. "The score was not close, but the games, and most of the points, were. We knew that Charleston Southern was going to bring the fight to us, and they did just that. This is the best team in the conference, and they played like it ... but, we fought back, and showed spirit that I don't think they knew we had. Now that we know what the best looks like, we know we have some work to do to bridge that gap, between us and them ... but I believe we can, and I believe we will!"
In singles action, Hubler defeated
Malin Allgurin/Värnamo, Sweden 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, while Placha defeated
Paloma Alatorre/Katy, Texas 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. At No. 3, Walters defeated
Sarah Moomau/Winchester, 6-1, 6-2, while Nicolin Luecke defeated
Anna Pelak/McLean, 6-0, 6-1, and Alia Nour defeated
Mason Thomas/Buchanan Dam, Texas at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. Gabriela Srodowski defeated
Bethany Law/Ona, West Virginia at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4, to round out singles play.
In doubles, the duo of Hubler and Walters defeated Allgurin and Moomau 8-0, at No. 1, Nour and Mi'Kola Cooper defeated Pelak and Alatorre at No. 2, 8-2. The pair of Placha and Luecke defeated Thomas and Law, 8-2, at No. 3.
