Longwood Rallies Past North Carolina Central 11-5

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News had three hits and two RBIs, freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania had three hits and one RBI, and freshman Ryan Jones/Fredericksburg collected his first collegiate pitching win, to lead Longwood University to an 11-5 non-conference baseball victory past North Carolina Central University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday night at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (17-24) won their third-straight game in come-from-behind fashion after falling behind early against the visiting Eagles (15-25-1).  Longwood will return to Big South Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at home against South Division opponent Presbyterian College that begins on Friday night, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
    
North Carolina Central scored a run in the first inning to lead 1-0.  Zack Lee (3-4) singled to open the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Bryant Battle (0-3, RBI).  The Eagles added three more runs in the second inning to lead 4-0.  Christian Triplett (1-5, RBI) got the at bat started with a solo home run off the left field foul pole.  Tyson Simpson (1-3, RBI) and Carter Williamson (2-4, 2 RBIs) each contributed run-scoring singles for the visitors, scoring Jared Kehagias (1-3) and Lee, who had walked and been hit by a pitch, respectively.
    
Longwood scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead for good at 5-4.  Freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (1-3) and McCafferty (3-5, RBI) each reached via a single, and Harvell scored on an infield RBI single to the right of the mound by sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (2-5, 2 RBIs).  Delk (3-5, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-run triple to left center field to plate both McCafferty and Roth, and Delk later crossed the plate on a passed ball.  Sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (1-4, 2 RBIs) walked and stole second base, scoring on an RBI double to right field by senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (1-3, 2 RBIs).
    
Longwood added a run in the fifth inning to lead 6-4.  Delk singled to open the at bat, advanced to second on a balk and scored from there on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Burkett.  The Lancers added two more runs in the sixth inning for an 8-4 advantage.  McCafferty singled and moved to third on a two-out double from Delk, and both runners scored on a two-run triple to left center by Washington.
    
Longwood scored three additional runs in the seventh inning to lead 11-4.  Burkett was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI single by McCafferty.  Harvell walked and later crossed the plate via a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-5, RBI), who also scored courtesy an RBI triple to right center by Roth.
    
North Carolina Central tallied a final run in the ninth inning for the final six-run margin.  Lee triple to left center field to open the frame and later scored on an RBI single from Williamson.
    
Jones (1-0) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief for Longwood to earn his first collegiate win, scattering three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.  Sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg tossed 2.0 shutout innings for the Lancers, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.  Freshman Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.  Three others pitched, as well, while senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (2-4) also added two hits for the hosts.
   
Eric Kimber (2-3) started for North Carolina Central and went the first 2.2 innings to take the loss, allowing six hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.  The Eagles used four other pitchers in the relief.
    
Longwood and North Carolina Central have now met 16 times since 2008 and the Lancers lead the all-time series, 11-5.
