Elizabeth McCarthy/Dunnsville (3.1, 5 Ks, 5 H) split time in the circle, allowing four earned runs each. Longwood (31-12, 14-6) will return to action on Tuesday, April 22 when the squad hosts in-state opponent Norfolk State University in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
"I believe we fought hard today," said head coach
Kathy Riley. "Coastal hit the ball with a lot of authority and we couldn't match their production. Now that we have been tested we have to show a champion's heart."
Longwood took an early, 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Baltzell ripped a two-out solo home run over the fence in right center. Morris struck out the first two CCU batters she faced, and although the home squad put a runner on with a double to left center, Barbour caught a popup at first to end the inning. Adams and Barbour both walked for the Lancers in the second, but were left on before one Chanticleer was stranded in the home half of the inning.
Coastal Carolina used back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the third to pull ahead, 2-1. Later in the inning, a two-run homer gave the Chants a three-run buffer at 4-1. In the fourth, Adams reached on a fielding error, but was thrown out at second, and Sara Rasley singled to left before she was out on a double play. Coastal added three runs in the fifth, thanks to two more home runs and a RBI single, giving the Chanticleers an 8-1 edge.
The Lancers started the sixth with base hits from Adams and Barbour, and Augustine followed with a walk to load the bases before sophomore
Emily Murphy/Virginia Beach (0-3, 1 RBI, 1 walk) drew a RBI walk to cut the difference to five at 7-2. Coastal responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly, and although Longwood notched three hits in the seventh, CCU was able to secure the 8-2 decision.
