Longwood Takes Twin Bill from Campbell on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman pitcher Elizabeth McCarthy/Dunnsville hurled a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader, as the Longwood University softball team swept Big South Conference opponent Campbell University (23-23, 9-8) on Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers topped the Fighting Camels, 6-1, before earning the 8-0 shutout in five innings in game two. McCarthy allowed just two walks in the program's first no-hitter since 2011. Sophomore Carly Adams/Colonial Heights paced the squad's offense with three hits (.600), including one home run, three runs and four RBI. Sophomore Megan Baltzell/Stafford hit .667 with three runs on the day, while classmate Chelsea Sciacca/Whittier, Calif. (.200) sealed the Lancers' win in game one with her first home run of the season, a grand slam over the fence in right center. Junior Libby Morris/Dillwyn turned in the complete-game performance in the circle in game one, conceding just three hits with five strikeouts. With the victories, Longwood improves to 30-8 overall, securing its 10th 30-win season under the direction of head coach Kathy Riley. Longwood (30-8, 14-2) and Campbell will wrap up the series with a single game tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 beginning at 1 p.m.

"Today was probably the most consistent day that we've had this year," said Riley. "If you look at all the phases of the game from pitching, to defense, to offense, to aggressive base running, I felt like we executed well in all those areas. Both pitchers did a really nice job today, including Biz (McCarthy), who threw the no-hitter, but really the defensive followed up and played pretty clean softball, as well. What you're seeing is a team starting to mature and come together. I saw a lot of confidence and positive signs today, so we're looking forward to the last few weeks of the season, using them to get better and better. Overall, I'm just really proud of how the team performed today."

After two quick outs in the top of the first of game one, Campbell extended its at-bat with a chopper down the right field line, but Morris was able to force the next batter into a groundout. In the Lancers' first trip to the dish, sophomore Emily Murphy/Virginia Beach (1-4, 1 run) turned on the first pitch she saw for a leadoff single through the right side, although she was eventually picked off diving back into the bag at third to keep the game scoreless through one complete. The Fighting Camels broke the game open in the second, as a walk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position for Shaela Churchill, who sent a long fly ball to the gap in right center to plate the go-ahead run. Longwood stranded one on third in the home half of the inning, as Adams legged out an infield single, moved up on an errant throw and stole third. The Lancers erased the difference in the third, however, with a five-run rally. Junior Casey Lifsey/Portsmouth (1-4, 2 runs) got things started with a bunt single, and Murphy and Baltzell each drew a walk to load the bases before Sciacca ripped a grand slam over the wall in right. Adams followed with a solo homer off the scoreboard to give the Lancers a 5-1 advantage.

Neither side was able to make any noise in the fourth, and Morris retired the CU side in order in the fifth, keeping the four-run margin intact until the bottom of the fifth when Longwood loaded the bases once again, this time for Adams, who put a ball in play to score the lead runner. Morris made it eight consecutive Camels retired in the sixth, and although CU put one on in the seventh, she was stranded there as Morris struck out final two batters to seal the 6-1 victory.

McCarthy took over the circle for the Lancers in game two, sitting down the first three Camels she faced with the help of a good catch on a line drive back at her. In the home half of the inning, Longwood loaded the bases with two walks and an error before Adams poked a two-RBI single to shallow left center. Later in the same at-bat, freshman Taylor Hedrick/Fredericksburg (1-6, 2 RBI) extended the Lancers' lead to 4-0, sending a line drive to left to plate both Adams and sophomore Jamie Barbour/Amelia (0-6, 1 run), who had reached on a fielder's choice. After McCarthy retired three more Campbell hitters in the second, Murphy walked and Baltzell reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on second and third, but both were stranded there. The Fighting Camels earned their first base runner of the game on a two-out walk in the top of the third, but the squad was unable to capitalize.

Both sides went three-up and three-down in their next at-bats before the Lancers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lifsey led off with a walk and junior Katie Shinrock/Fountain Valley, Calif. (1-4, 3 runs) was hit by a pitch to bring up Baltzell, who sent a single up the middle that allowed Lifsey to score with a great slide at the plate. With two outs, Barbour reached on an error that scored two runs, and Adams came home on a wild pitch during the next at-bat to give Longwood the 8-0 advantage. The first two CU batters of the fifth inning grounded out, and following a walk, freshman Justina Augustine/Warrenton (0-3, 1 walk) caught a popup at second to end the game and secure the mercy-rule decision.
