Longwood Sweeps Doubleheader From Ohio 1-0, 7-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Juniors Aaron Myers/Newport News and Brandon Vick/Newport News each pitched complete-games to lead Longwood University to a non-conference baseball doubleheader sweep past Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference on Saturday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville, winning the opener 1-0 and the nightcap 7-1.  Freshman Alex Lewis/Burke had the game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of the opener for the Lancers (7-8), scoring junior Brandon Delk/Newport News, who had doubled, and Lewis added three RBI, including a two-run double in the first inning of the nightcap.  Senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning of game two, and senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville, who hit a two-run double in the first, each contributed two RBI against the visiting Bobcats (3-8).  Longwood and Ohio will play another doubleheader on Sunday, March 9 at 12 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville … a change from the originally-scheduled 1 p.m. start time.

In game one, Myers (3-0, 1.69 ERA) went the distance while limiting Ohio to only four hits (singles) with six strikeouts and two walks.  He only faced adversity in the fourth and seventh innings against the Bobcats.  In the fourth, Scott White (1-4) and Mitch Longo (3-4) each singled before a fly ball and a double play stranded White at second base.  In the seventh, Longo singled and stole second ahead of a walk and OU had runners at second and third after a sacrifice bunt.  A two-out walk loaded the bases before a strikeout by Myers ended the threat.

Longwood stranded two runners in the fourth inning after a single by Delk (2-4) and a walk to Owens (1-2), before winning it in the bottom of the ninth when Delk doubled to lead-off, moved to third on a ground ball by sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (0-4) and scored the game-winning run on the sacrifice fly by Lewis (0-2, RBI).  Burkett (1-3) and senior captain Matt Dickason/ Chesapeake (1-4) each added hits in the opener for the hosts.

Jake Roehn (1-2) took the hard-luck pitching loss for Ohio, going 8.2 innings and scattering five hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, Longwood scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning to lead 6-0.  Sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4), Dickason (1-4) and Delk (1-4) each singled before a one-out, two-run double by Owens (1-3, 2 RBI) scored Roth and Dickason.  Lewis (1-4, 3 RBI) followed with a two-run double to score Delk and Owens, and Burkett (1-4, 2 RBI) promptly hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field, that plated Lewis for the early six-run advantage.

Ohio avoided another shutout with a run in the fourth inning after Longo (0-3) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielder's choice by Taylor Emody (0-3, RBI).

The Lancers added a run in the fifth inning when Washington (1-4) singled, stole second base and advanced to third, and scored on a ground ball from Lewis to provide for the final six-run margin of victory.  Senior Cory Ramsey/Petersburg (1-2) and freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (1-3) each added hits, including a double by Ramsey.

Vick (1-1, 1.88 ERA) took care of the rest for Longwood, going the distance while limiting Ohio to just three hits (singles) and one earned run with seven strikeouts and three walks.  He did strand two runners in the ninth, after a walk and pinch-hit single, by getting a strikeout and a fly ball to end the game.

Jake Miller (0-1) started and took the mound loss for the Bobcats with 1.0 inning, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks.
