Cory Ramsey/Petersburg added a grand slam home run against the host Eagles (3-8-1). Longwood is scheduled to host Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference for a four-game weekend series on March 7-9 at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
Longwood scored five runs in the top of the first inning as sophomore
C.J. Roth/Yorktown (3-6, RBI) singled to open the game, followed by walks to senior captain
Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-5) and junior
Brandon Delk/Newport News (0-3) to load the bases. Owens (2-4, 3 RBI) was hit by a pitch with one out to score Roth, and with two outs, Ramsey hit his first collegiate home run to right field, a grand slam homer, nonetheless, for a 5-0 advantage. North Carolina Central scored a run in the first to make it 5-1.
The Lancers added four runs in the top of the second inning to lead 9-1, getting a three-run double from Washington (2-4, 3 RBI) to score Roth, Dickason and Delk after Roth and Dickason had singled and Delk had earned another walk. Freshman
Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (0-4, RBI) later gained an RBI when he drew another bases loaded walk to score Washington.
The Eagles, however, scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the third inning to lead 12-9. Williamson (2-6, 4 RBI) had the big hit during the at bat with the three-run homer, and Jared Kehagias (2-3, 3 RBI) added a two-run single for the hosts.
Longwood battled back with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within 12-11 on a two-run home run to right field by Owens. NCCU, however, added two runs in the fourth, as well … getting a pair of bases loaded walks to lead 14-11. The Eagles scored single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to increase the margin to 16-11. The Lancers managed a final run in the top of the ninth inning via a run-scoring single by Roth.
Sophomore
Blake Ream/Yorktown started for Longwood and pitched the first 2.0-plus innings, yielding four hits and six earned runs with one strikeout and four walks. Freshman
Luke Simpson/Danville (1-1) took the loss for the Lancers with two-thirds of an inning, allowing four hits and four earned runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg made his first mound appearance and tossed the final 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts and no walks.
Jones (1-0) gained the pitching win for NCCU with 1.2 innings of relief, scattering two hits and three earned runs with no strikeouts and three walks.
