Longwood Falls In 10 Innings To Campbell 4-1

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Elijah Trail had two hits and two RBI to lead visiting Campbell University to a 4-1 Big South Conference baseball victory in 10 innings at Longwood University on Friday night at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The fellow North Division Fighting Camels (16-7,  2-2 Big South) scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch against the Lancers (12-11, 2-2 Big South), who received an outstanding pitching effort from senior Aaron Myers/Newport News.  Myers tossed 9.0 innings of one-hit baseball and tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts in the no-decision outing.  Longwood and Campbell will play again on Saturday, March 22 at 4 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville in a game designated Play4Kay to raise awareness for breast cancer victims and fighters with free pink t-shirts to the first 50 fans, and all proceeds and donations will support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Campbell scored a run in the first inning to lead 1-0, as Danny Pardo (1-3) and Steven Leonard (0-4) each drew walks to open the game and Pardo later scored during a throw to second base on a successful steal attempt by Kyle Leady (0-4), who had reached on a fielder's choice to move Pardo to third.

Longwood put a run on the board in the fourth inning to tie it at 1-1, getting a no-doubt solo home run to left field from senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (3-4, RBI), who had three hits in the game, and his second homer this season.

Myers settled down after the first and retired 21 of 24 batters from the second through the eighth innings, including 13-straight at one point, and finished nine innings on the mound with only one hit allowed, tying his career high with 10 strikeouts.

Campbell scored three runs in the 10th inning to secure the win in the series opener, getting three singles and also aided by a fielding error at second.  John Reilly (1-4) and Pardo reached on back-to-back singles with one out before Leonard reached on the error to load the bases against sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg, who had replaced Myers in the extra inning.  Reilly scored on the wild pitch, and with two outs, Trail added a two-run single for the Fighting Camels.

Myers pitched the first 9.0 innings for Longwood, yielding just the one hit … with one out in the ninth to Trail… and one earned run with the 10 strikeouts and three walks.  Burnette (1-2) tossed the final 1.0 inning for the Lancers, allowing three hits and three runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.

Ryan Thompson (4-0) pitched the final 3.0 shutout innings for Campbell and gained the win, allowing just two hits with one strikeout and two walks.  Heath Bowers had started for the Fighting Camels and went the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering five hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and four walks.
