Longwood Falls In Series Finale At Wofford 4-3

Box Score

Scheduled game against William and Mary on Tuesday, March 4 has been canceled.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Matt Ramsey had two hits, including a game-winning solo home run in the ninth inning, and Jesse Morris pitched the final 2.1 innings for the win, to lead Wofford College of the Southern Conference to its second consecutive 4-3 non-conference baseball victory past Longwood University on Sunday in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News had two hits and three RBI, including his fourth home run this season, and senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville had three hits (two doubles) for the visiting Lancers (5-7), while sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg took the mound loss in late relief against the host Terriers (7-4).  Longwood is scheduled to play at North Carolina Central University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday, March 5 at 6 p.m. in Durham, North Carolina.

"I thought our guys played a really hard game today and we fought back in the game there in the last inning with the home run by Delk," said first-year Longwood head coach Brian McCullough.  "The pitching staff as a whole over the weekend threw the ball really well, but we just didn't have the timely hitting and the defense that we needed to win the series."

Longwood took a 2-0 lead in top of the first inning as sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4) opened the game with a single and Owens (3-4) followed with a double to move Roth to third.  Delk (2-4, 3 RBI) plated both runners with his clutch two-out, two-run single.

Wofford tied it at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning after Derek Hirsch (1-1) reached on an infield single and scored ahead of Josh Hyman (1-3, 3 RBI), who homered with one out.  The Terriers took a 3-2 advantage with another run in the fifth inning when Conor Clancey (0-4) reached on a fielding error at second base and later scored unearned via a sacrifice fly by Hyman.

Longwood tied it at 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning courtesy of Delk's team-leading fourth home run this season, a solo blast to left field while leading-off.

Wofford won its second-straight 4-3 decision against the Lancers after Ramsey hit his walk-off home run to center field with one out.

Sophomore Allen Ellis/Mechanicsville started for Longwood and pitched the first 4.2 innings, scattering three hits and three runs, two earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Burnette (0-1) took the loss with the final 1.1 innings for the Lancers, yielding just the one hit and one earned run with one strikeout and no walks.

Burnette (2-4), who started in right field, along with freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (2-4) each collected two hits for Longwood.

Connell Anderson started for Wofford and pitched the first 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk.  Morris (3-1) gained the win for the Terriers with the final 2.1 innings, yielding two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and no walks.
