Longwood Welcomes Charleston Southern

Lancers and South Division opponent Buccaneers to play three-game weekend series to open 2014 Big South Conference action

FARMVILLE, Va. –
Longwood University will play its first three-game Big South Conference series of 2014 at home this weekend, March 14-16, against South Division opponent Charleston Southern University at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers enter the opening league series with a record of 9-9 overall, and will play the Buccaneers (13-5) on Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Friday game will be broadcast locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at wvhl.net, and is also a LancerStrong event with attendance by all Longwood student-athletes, while the Saturday and Sunday games will be video-streamed live on the Big South Network.

Series History / Pitching Rotations
Longwood and Charleston Southern have never met previously in the sport.  The Lancers will have a pitching rotation that features junior RHP Aaron Myers/Newport News (3-0, 169 ERA) on Friday, junior LHP Brandon Vick/Newport News (1-1, 1.88 ERA) on Saturday and sophomore RHP Allen Ellis/Mechanicsville (1.1, 4.29 ERA) on Sunday.  The Buccaneers will counter with LHP Tory Schroff (1-0, 1.12 ERA) on Friday, RHP Tyler Weekley (3-0, 0.37 ERA) or RHP Levi Mauldin (2-1, 3.43 ERA) on Saturday and LHP Andrew Tomasovich (3-0, 3.04 ERA) on Sunday.

A Look At Longwood Offensively / Season Statistics
Longwood is batting .261 through 18 games while averaging 5.1 runs with 12 home runs, four triples, 26 doubles, 91 RBI and 19 stolen bases.  Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News (.343, 4 HR, 2 2B, 15 RBI, 14 R) has led the Lancers, and has six multi-hit and four multi-RBI games.  Others hitting well are senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (.338, 2 3B, 4 2B, 5 RBI, 12 R, 2 SB), sophomores C.J. Roth/Yorktown (.292, 1 3B, 1 2B, 7 RBI, 10 R, 2 SB) and Colton Konvicka/Richmond (.276, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 5 R, 6 SB), senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (.275, 3 HR, 7 2B, 17 RBI, 9 R, 1 SB) and sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (.274, 2 HR, 6 2B, 14 RBI, 13 R, 5 SB).

A Look At Longwood Pitching / Season Statistics
Longwood has an impressive early-season earned run average of 3.99 through 160.0 innings with 119 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .245 batting average.  Aaron Myers (3-0, 1.69 ERA, 32.0 IP, 31K) has led the Lancer starters, and has four appearances with four starts, two complete games and one shutout.  Also throwing well from the mound has been Brandon Vick (1-1, 1.88 ERA, 28.2 IP, 17K, four appearances-four starts-one complete game) and Allen Ellis (1-1, 4.29 ERA, 21.0 IP, 13K, four appearances-four starts).  Sophomore RHP Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (1-1, 1.65 ERA, 16.1 IP, 9K, four saves, eight appearances) has anchored the bullpen in the team's closer role.

The Head Coach
Brian McCullough has an overall record of 9-9 in his first season as mentor of the tradition-rich program.  A former starting pitcher and team captain for the Lancers, he served the past four years as an assistant coach, most-recently as the program's recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, while also assisting with all baseball operations, including scheduling.  McCullough has played professionally in the independent Frontier, Northern and Atlantic Leagues (2007-11).

NCAA Statistics
Through March 9, Longwood ranked 18th in Division I home runs, 35th in double plays, 52nd in hits, 54th in triples, 62nd in runs, 69th in shutouts, 84th in stolen bases and 91st in doubles.  Aaron Myers ranked third in Division I complete games, 15th in games started, 22nd in strikeouts and 24th in wins.  Brandon Vick ranked 10th in complete games and 15th in games started.  Brandon Delk ranked 14th in home runs, 65th in total bases and 89th in RBI.  Allen Ellis ranked 15th in games started.  Alex Owens ranked 22nd in doubles, 28th in home runs, 37th in RBI and 48th in total bases.  Matt Dickason ranked 30th in triples and 59th in hits.  Freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown ranked 34th in sacrifice bunts.  Travis Burnette ranked 45th in saves.

Big South Statistics / Weekly Report (PDF)
Through March 9, Brandon Delk led the Big South in home runs, was tied for fifth in RBI and total bases, and 10th in runs.  Aaron Myers led the Big South in complete games, was tied for first in innings pitched and shutouts, and third in strikeouts.  Matt Dickason was tied for first in triples and eighth in hits.  Alex Owens was second in RBI, tied for second in home runs, doubles and total bases, fifth in slugging percentage and tied for sixth in walks.  Brandon Vick was tied for second in complete games and fifth in innings pitched.  Travis Burnette was tied for fourth in saves.  Colton Konvicka and Kyri Washington were each tied for seventh in stolen bases.

Season Superlatives
Kyri Washington is the team leader with seven multi-hit games, followed by Brandon Delk (6), Matt Dickason (5) and Alex Owens (5).  Owens and Delk each have four multi-RBI games, followed by Washington (3).  Delk had team season-bests of four hits, five RBI, three runs and seven total bases against Marist (2/22).  Owens had 15 putouts against East Tennessee State (2/17).  C.J. Roth had seven assists against Marist (2/23).  Aaron Myers went the distance in complete games against Wofford (2/28) and Ohio (3/8), and posted nine strikeouts against Marist (2/22) and Wofford (2/28).  Brandon Vick went the distance in a complete game against Ohio (3/8).

Streaks Of Note
Alex Owens has the season's longest hitting streak of 10 games (15-35, .429), tied for third-best in the Big South this season, and a current streak of reaching base of 11 games, also a season's best.  C.J. Roth has the second longest hitting streak of nine games (13-38, .342), and the second-longest streak of reaching base at 10 games.  Matt Dickason has an eight-game hitting streak (14-35, .400) to his credit this season, and a streak of reaching base at eight games, both third-best on the team.  Brandon Delk has the longest current hitting streak of five games (9-20, .450).

Perfect At The End
Longwood is a perfect 8-0 this season when leading after seven and/or eight innings.  The Lancers are 8-3 when out-hitting their opponents.

Home Field Advantage
Longwood has an overall record of 358-160 (.691) at Bolding Stadium, including 7-3 at home this season.  The Lancers are 98-71 (.580) in Farmville since becoming Division I-eligible for 2008.  Longwood inaugurated competition at the completely renovated facility (formerly Lancer Stadium) in 1994, and won that first game 8-3 vs. Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) on March 12, 1994.

Up Next
Longwood will play a non-conference game at the College of William and Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association on March 19, before hosting another three-game Big South series against South Division opponent Campbell University on March 21-23.  The middle game of the series against the Fighting Camels on March 22 has been designated Play4Kay to raise awareness for breast cancer victims and fighters with free pink t-shirts to the first 50 fans, and all proceeds and donations will support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
