Longwood Falls, 69-47, against Liberty on Senior Day

FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Daeisha Brown/Richmond recorded a team-best 10 points, as the Longwood University women's basketball team fell, 69-47, against Big South Conference and in-state rival Liberty University (19-10, 15-5) on Saturday in the squad's regular-season finale and Senior Day game. Longwood trailed by just nine early in the second half, but was unable to come any closer. The team's lone senior, Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas, who was honored in a special pre-game ceremony, added to the offensive effort with nine points in the outing. Freshman Treasure Avery/Lincolnton, N.C. paced the Lancers on the glass with six rebounds. Ashley Rininger led the Flames in the victory with 17 points. Longwood (8-21, 5-15) earned the No. 10 seed for the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women's Basketball Championship and will play a first round game at against No. 7 Presbyterian College at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C. on Tuesday, March 4 at 1 p.m.

"Our effort was very good this afternoon," said head coach Bill Reinson. "We didn't play very smart, but we battled. We had cut the lead to nine early in the second half, but didn't score for six minutes. It could have been fatigue, but you still need to make shots to win games. We made it through the game healthy and I am looking forward to next week in Myrtle Beach."

Liberty opened the game with nine consecutive points in the first four and a half minutes to take an early advantage. Tobeck put the Lancers on the board with a layup from the right side, but the Flames added six more points to take a 15-2 lead with 13:33 remaining in the first half. Longwood followed with a three from sophomore Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. and a jumper from Brown to cut the difference to just eight at 15-7. However, the Flames put together a 16-4 run over the next 10 minutes to pull away, 31-11, with just over two minutes to play in the half. Sophomore Khalilah Ali/Suffolk knocked down a jumper and classmate Deborah Headen/Herndon buried a three in the waning minutes, but the visitors took a 35-19 edge into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Brown hit a three-pointer to spark a 10-3 spurt for the Lancers and cut the buffer back to single digits at 38-29 with 16:55 to go in the outing. Longwood went silent for just over six minutes, though, as Liberty scored 17 unanswered points during the stretch to take a 55-29 advantage at 11:27. Tobeck banked in a layup and Skersick drained a jumper from beyond the arc before the visitors took their largest lead of the day at 63-34 with just over seven minutes to left to play. The Flames led by 29 once more in the contest, and although Longwood ended the game on an 11-4 run, Liberty took the 69-47 decision.

Avery added seven points to her team-best six boards, while Skersick totaled seven points, as well. As a team, the Lancers shot 28% (15-53) from the floor, including 29% (6-21) from beyond the arc, and 85% (11-13) from the line in the outing.

Rininger was the only player to score in double-digits for the Flames, but Simone Brown registered a team-high 10 rebounds. As a whole, Liberty shot 42% (25-60) from the field, 26% (6-23) from three-point territory and 59% (13-22) from the foul line.

Saturday's contest marked the 33rd meeting ever between Longwood and Liberty in the sport of women's basketball. The Flames hold a slight, 18-15 edge in the all-time series.
