Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Eric Brenk had two hits and two RBI, including a game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning, and Luke Leftwich pitched 7.0 strong innings with nine strikeouts, to lead Wofford College of the Southern Conference to a 4-3 non-conference baseball victory past Longwood University on Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville led the visiting Lancers (5-6) with one hit and one RBI against the host Terriers (6-4), while freshman Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky took the mound loss in relief.  Longwood and Wofford will complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 2 at 1 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Wofford took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning, getting a two-out, two-run single from Brenk (2-3, 2 RBI) to score Seth Neely (3-4, RBI) and James Plaisted (0-3).  Both runs were unearned, as Neely had reached on a two-out single, while Plaisted reached on a fielding error at third base.

Longwood got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 2-1 as sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4) got the first hit of the game for the visitors with a two-out single, stole second base and scored on a run scoring single by Owens (1-3, RBI).

Wofford added another unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead 3-1 after Demetrius Jennings (1-4) reached courtesy a two-out throwing error at shortstop and crossed the plate on an RBI single by Neely.

Longwood plated two runs on just one hit in the top of the eighth inning to tie it at 3-3, aided by three walks and a hit batter.  Freshman Alex Lewis/Fairfax Station (1-4) singled to third base to open the frame, followed by a walk to classmate Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (0-2), who was pinch-run for by sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (0-1).  A sacrifice bunt by freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (0-2) advanced both runners before a two-out walk to Owens loaded the bases.
Senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (0-2, RBI) drew another walk to force Lewis across the plate, while sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (0-3, RBI) was hit by the pitch to score Burnette.

Brenk got what proved to be the game-winning hit with his lead-off solo homer to left field in the bottom of the eighth.  The Lancers, unfortunately, went down in order in the ninth inning.

Junior Brandon Vick/Newport News started for Longwood and pitched the first 6.2 solid innings, scattering six hits and the three unearned runs with the four strikeouts and three walks. Kuebbing (1-1) took the loss with the final 1.1 innings for the Lancers, yielding one hit and one earned run with no strikeouts and no walks.

Leftwich started for Wofford and pitched the first 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts and no walks.  Will Stillman (1-0) gained the win for the Terriers with the final 1.1 shutout innings, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
