Longwood Drops Series Finale To Marist 4-2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Graham McIntire had three hits, and Tyler Kirkpatrick and Pat Welsh each had two hits and one RBI, while Scott Boches went 7.2 innings on the mound, to lead Marist College to a 4-2 non-conference baseball victory at Longwood University on Sunday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  Freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania had two hits and an RBI to lead the host Lancers (4-4) against the visiting Red Foxes (2-6), and junior Brandon Vick/Newport News took the mound loss.  Longwood will host George Mason University of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Wednesday, February 26 at 3 p.m. at Bolding Stadium.
   
Marist took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Zach Passerelle (1-3) walked with one out, moved to second on a single by Ben Moller (1-4) and scored on an RBI single by Welsh (2-4, RBI).
   
Longwood answered with two runs in the fourth inning to lead 2-1 as senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-5) doubled off the fence in left field, and freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (1-3) drew a two-out walk.  McCafferty (2-3, RBI) followed with a clutch RBI single that scored Dickason, and sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4, RBI) added another RBI single to score Lewis.
   
The Red Foxes, however, scored a pair of unearned run in the fifth inning to lead 3-2 after Kirkpatrick (2-3, RBI) walked to open the at bat and scored from first courtesy a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Matt Pagano (1-5), who advanced to third on the play.  Pagano scored on a ground ball from Steve Laurino (0-4, RBI).  Marist added another run in the sixth inning to lead 4-2 when Welsh singled with two outs and advanced to second on the throw, scoring on a two-out, RBI single by Kirkpatrick.
   
Vick (0-1) started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering nine hits and four runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and three walks.  Freshman Devin Gould/Fairfax Station tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the Lancers, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.
   
Boches (1-0) went 7.2 innings for Marist, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and four walks.  Ryan Thomas (2) pitched the final 1.1 shutout innings to earn the save for the Red Foxes, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.  McIntire (3-5) had the three hits for the visitors, each singles.
   
Longwood won three of the four games played during the weekend series.
