Longwood Sweeps Twinbill From Marist 16-4, 3-2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News had four hits and five RBI in game one, including a grand slam home run, and sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect provided a game-winning RBI single in game two, leading Longwood University to a baseball doubleheader sweep past Marist College by scores of 16-4 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  Freshman Luke Simpson/Danville earned the pitching win in relief in the opener for the Lancers (4-3), while sophomore Allen Ellis/Mechanicsville gained the mound win in the nightcap, and sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg earned his third save.  Longwood and the Red Foxes (1-6) will play the series finale on Sunday, February 23 at 1 p.m. at Bolding Stadium.
   
In the opener, Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (3-5, 3 RBI) singled and later scored on an RBI by freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (2-4, 3 RBI).  The Lancers made it 2-0 in the fourth as Burkett singled again and scored on an RBI single by Lewis.  Marist tied it at 2-2 in the fifth on a two-run single from Matt Pagano (2-4, 2 RBI), and the Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Ben Moller (0-2, RBI) provided a sacrifice fly.  Marist made it 4-2 in the seventh on an RBI from Steve Laurino (1-4, RBI).
  
Longwood took a 5-4 lead in the seventh with three runs on four hits and aided by an error.  Senior captain Matt Dickinson/Chesapeake (4-6) doubled to open the at bat and advanced to third on a throwing error.  Washington followed with a walk before an RBI single by Delk scored Dickason, and Washington crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (1-3, RBI).  Delk scored on another run-scoring single by Lewis.
   
The Lancers broke it open in the eighth with 11 runs on eight hits, including the grand slam by Delk.  Sophomore C.J. Roth/ Yorktown (2-6) and Dickason each singled to lead off, and Roth scored on an RBI single by Washington.  A single by Delk loaded the bases, and a walk to senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (0-5, RBI) plated Dickason.  Burkett added a three-run double to score Washington, Delk and Owens.  McCafferty was hit by a pitch and Lewis walked to load the bases again for freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (2-5, 2 RBI), who hit a two-run single to score Burkett and McCafferty.  Following two outs, Washington singled to load the base for Delk, who hit his third home run of the season for the 14-run advantage.
   
Junior Aaron Myers/Newport News started and pitched the first 6.0 innings for Longwood, scattering four hits and three runs, two earned, with nine strikeouts and two walks.  Simpson (1-0) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief for the win, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
   
In the nightcap, Marist led 1-0 in the first inning after an RBI single from Nick McQuail (1-4, RBI).  Longwood took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run double by Roth (1-3, 2 RBI) that scored Lewis (0-3) and Harvell (0-0), who had reached on a fielder's choice and walked, respectively.  The Red Foxes tied it at 2-2 in the eighth on a solo homer by Graham McIntire (2-4, RBI), but the Lancers answered with the game-winning run in the eighth, as well, when Harvell walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Roth, advanced to third on a single by Dickason (1-4) and scored on an RBI single from Washington (1-3, RBI).
   
Burkett (2-3) had two hits in game two for Longwood, while Pa0gano (3-4) had three hits for Marist.
   
Ellis (1-0) started and pitched the first 8.0 innings for Longwood, scattering six hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and four walks.  Burnette (3) tossed the final shutout inning for his second save on two days, yielding two hits with one strikeout and no walks.
