Longwood Wins Home Opener Past Marist 5-3

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown had three hits, sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown had two hits and one RBI, and freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania had one hit and two RBI, to lead Longwood University to a 5-3 baseball victory past Marist College on Friday evening at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  Freshman Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky pitched 5.0 scoreless innings of relief for his first collegiate win, while sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg earned his second save this season for the Lancers (2-3) in their home opener.  Jamari Moore had two hits to lead the visiting Red Foxes (1-4), and Jordan Eich took the mound loss.  Longwood and Marist will play a doubleheader on Saturday, February 22, beginning at 1 p.m. at Bolding Stadium.  (please note that there will be no live stats scoring for the twinbill on Saturday)

"I thought our guys came out with great energy in the first inning, bouncing back with four runs after they had scored a run," said first-year Longwood head coach Brian McCullough.  "Hats off to Mitch on his first collegiate victory and pitching five scoreless innings for us … he had his fastball and his breaking ball working for strikes.  Travis did a great job of closing the door down at the end with two scoreless innings, as well."

Marist opened with a run in the first inning to lead 1-0 as Moore (2-4) singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Steve Laurino (1-4, RBI).

Longwood answered with four runs on five hits in its half of the first, aided by a fielding error.  Roth (2-3, RBI) singled to lead off, and after an out, advanced to second when sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (0-4) reached on the miscue.  Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single that scored Roth.  Washington moved to third on a ground out, before senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (0-3) walked.  McCafferty (1-3, 2 RBI) came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single that plated both Delk and Washington.  Burkett scored another run on an RBI single by freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (1-2, RBI) and the Lancers led 4-1.

The Red Foxes added two runs in the second inning when Zach Passerelle (1-3) singled, stole both second and third, and scored on an RBI single by Pat Welsh (1-3, RBI).  Welsh later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice RBI by Ben Moller (0-3, RBI), who had laid down a well-placed bunt back to the mound, and the throw to the plate was off target.

Longwood added an insurance run in the sixth inning after McCafferty drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lewis.  A single from Harvell (3-3) advanced McCafferty to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Roth.

Kuebbing (1-0) and Burnette (2) took care of the rest for the Lancers.  Kuebbing went 5.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits with five strikeouts and no walks for his first college pitching win.  Burnette tossed the final 2.0 shutout innings, allowing no hits with three strikeouts and no walks for his second save in two attempts.  Senior Ryan Schubert/Springfield had started and pitched the first 2.0 innings, yielding five hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks.

Eich (0-1) started for Marist and went the first 5.1 innings for the decision, allowing eight hits and five runs, one earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.
