Longwood Hosts Winthrop on Thursday

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's basketball team will host Big South Conference opponent Winthrop University on Thursday, February 20 at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall. The contest is the first of three-straight home games for the Lancers to close the regular season. The game will be streamed live on the Big South Network.

Looking at Longwood
Longwood is currently 7-19 overall this season, including 4-13 in Big South Conference action, after dropping a pair of league games on the road last week. The Lancers battled back and forth against Gardner-Webb and forced overtime with a bucket from sophomore Deborah Headen/Herndon before falling 74-73 on Feb. 13. The team then faced a 69-52 setback at UNC Asheville in its final road game of the season on Feb. 15. Through 26 games, sophomore Daeisha Brown/Richmond paces the team with 15.5 points per game. Classmate Raven Williams/Richmond has added to the offensive effort with 11.6 points per game, while sophomore Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. and redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas average 9.4 and 7.3 points, respectively. Sophomore Khalilah Ali/Suffolk leads the Lancers on the glass with 6.0 rebounds per game, while Brown adds 5.0. As a team, Longwood is shooting 34.2% (524-1533) from the floor, including 26.5% (143-540) from beyond the arc, and 66.6% (307-461) from the foul line.

Scouting Winthrop
The Eagles own a 19-6 overall record in 2013-14, including a 13-3 mark in Big South games, good for first in the conference. WU is in the midst of a six-game win streak, including a 57-40 victory against Radford on Feb. 15 in its only contest last week. Winthrop, under the direction of second-year head coach Kevin Cook, is led by Dequesha McClanahan with 17.0 points per game. Erica Williams and Shaquilla Nunn add to the offensive effort with 15.4 and 12.4 points, respectively. Nunn also leads the team on the glass with 10.9 rebounds per game for a double-double average. The Eagles are currently shooting 41.3% (634-1536) from the floor, 28.1% (89-317) on three-point opportunities and 69.5% (342-492) from the foul line.

Series History
Thursday's contest will mark the 13th meeting between Longwood and Winthrop in the sport. The Eagles hold a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series, including a 70-49 home win when they met earlier this season on January 18. The Lancers, who led for the majority of the first half in that contest, went into halftime trailing by just one before being outscored, 38-18, in the second half.
