ROCK HILL, S.C. – Coming off its first victory of the season Sunday over Gardner-Webb, Longwood traveled to Winthrop looking for a second-straight win to propel the squad into the 2015 portion of the schedule.
However, Winthrop's Schaquilla Nunn and Erica Williams combined to score 29 second-half points and each recorded a double-double to lead the Eagles past the visiting Lancers, 81-48, Tuesday evening inside Winthrop Coliseum.
"Coming on the heels of our first win on Sunday, this effort was disappointing," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "We're able to compete for a while, but we still struggle to maintain our intensity when shots aren't falling."
The Eagles, the 2014 Big South Conference Champions, improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Longwood falls to 1-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Raven Williams once again led the Lancers with 17 points, as she extended her streak of games of 16 or more points to six straight. The Richmond, Va., product also notched two assists to go along with two steals in 39 minutes of playing time.
But it was Nunn and Williams who aided the Eagles in controling the paint, where Winthrop held a 42-20 advantage. Nunn had 20 of her 21 points inside the paint to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds. Williams also filled the stat sheet, as she added 14 of her game-high 22 points in the paint to go along with 11 boards, four assists, one block and one steal.
Holding a 12-point advantage at the half, 35-23, Winthrop took control of the game at the start of the second half with a 12-3 run over the opening 5:11 to push the lead to 21 points and ultimately out of reach for the Lancers. Â
For the Lancers, Williams continues to lead the squad on the court, since the loss of
Daeisha Brown in the third game of the year at Richmond. Over the past six games, Williams has averaged 17.5 points per contest and has steadily climbed into the top-15 in the league in scoring entering Tuesday's game with 12.3 points per contest.
Jaclyn Reagan joined Williams in double figures with a season-high 11 points, as she was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. The 11 points is one point shy of Reagan's career-high 12 points that she recorded last season at High Point.
The Lancers will host three consecutive games inside Willett Hall beginning Saturday, Jan. 3 against Campbell. The game will tip at 2 p.m., and will be followed by the men's team playing Radford. The three- game home stand will be Longwood's longest of the season. Â
"With the next three games in Willett, this will be a good opportunity to get back on track," Reinson said.
