Late Run Pushes Campbell Past Longwood

14-0 Stretch Seals Longwood's Fate, Denies Upset Bid

FARMVILLE, Va. – Everything was going the Lancers' way early on as Longwood built a 22-13 advantage just over 11 minutes into the game. That would be the largest lead Longwood (1-13, 1-3) could manufacture, as Campbell (8-5, 3-1) used a late first half surge to pull within three and would eventually use a 14-0 second half run to pull away for a 65-58 victory.

The quick start marked the third consecutive game inside of Willett Hall in which the Lancers came out of the gates fast. Deborah Headen and Brenna Robbins were a big part of the early success, scoring 10 and six, respectively, in the opening half. Headen hit four of her first six shots, including two three-pointers, en route to her 10 point half. Meanwhile, Robbins added an impressive seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes, battling a bigger Campbell frontline to produce one of her best rebounding performances as a Lancer.

Once Longwood pushed the margin to nine at the 8:42 mark, Campbell began to turn up the defensive pressure. The Camels would limit the Lancers to just one bucket and two points for the remainder of the half, allowing Campbell to slowly crawl back into the game. The Lancers managed to hold a 24-21 lead at the break, thanks in large part to a terrific defensive performance.

The Lancers produced one of their best defensive halves of the season, holding Campbell to just 9-of-31 from the field and 1-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Camels' 32-percent effort from the field was the lowest shooting percentage Longwood has allowed in a half since the season opener at Wake Forest.

In the second half, the game turned into a back-and-forth struggle with neither team able to wrest control of the game. Raven Williams sank a layup at the 16:29 mark to give Longwood an early 31-25 lead, but Campbell answered with a 7-0 run in the next 49 seconds to take a 1-point advantage. The lead marked the first time Campbell had led since the opening bucket of the game.

The next ten minutes were a seesaw affair, with neither team leading by more than five points. Jaclyn Reagan hit a pair of threes along with a pair of free throws to tally her eight points all within a four minute span. Moments later, Williams drained a long-range three with 5:18 to play, staking Longwood to a 52-47 advantage. That's when Campbell, who had not led by more than three points the entire game, went on a 14-0 tear over the next four minutes to salt the game away.

The Camels were sparked by Summer Price, who provided nine of the 14 points in Campbell's decisive run. Price finished with 22 to lead all scorers and hit 10-of-13 free throws, including 8-of-9 in the final 4:30 after missing a pair of technical free throws.

The Lancers were led by Williams with 16 points on just 5-of-18 shooting. Williams also added seven rebounds in her 38 minutes of action. Robbins ended the game with 6 points and 10 rebounds, one shy of her career mark. After her strong first half, Deborah Headen finished with 12 points and three assists in 35 minutes.

Longwood now prepares for a short turnaround to face Coastal Carolina on Monday night in Willett Hall. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game is available to watch for free on the Big South Network at www.BigSouthSports.com.
